When it comes to country music couples, there are very few that are as adorable as Faith Hill and Tim McGraw. Not only have the two been together since 1996, but they have also welcomed three children and co-starred in the award-winning Yellowstone prequel show, 1883. Below, we look at their love story and find out what the couple has been doing since leaving the Yellowstone Dutton Ranch.

How Faith Hill and Tim McGraw first met

Hill and McGraw first met in 1994, when she was engaged to record producer Scott Hendricks and he was dating Kristine Donahue, who was not involved in the industry. The pair remained friends for two years before going on tour together in 1996. Later that same year, Hill ended her engagement to Hendricks and McGraw proposed to Hill while on stage. It is unclear when they went from friends to more than that.

“We were in the dressing room, here, June 26, 1996, and it was raining and stuff and we’d been on tour for a while together, and I joked around with her about getting married. And so I looked at her, grabbed her by the hands and dropped forward [on my knees] onstage,” McGraw recalled in a 2021 social media video. “She said, ‘We’re at a country music festival in a trailer house, and you’re asking me to marry you?’ And I said, ‘Yeah.’ So I went onstage … When I came back offstage, [I saw] a mirror with lipstick kisses all over it, saying, ‘Yes! I’m gonna be your wife.’ And we still have that mirror. And it was the best day of my life, that’s for sure.”

Their 1996 wedding and growing family

The pair said “I do” in October 1996. It was McGraw’s first marriage and Hill’s second. She was previously married to Daniel Hill from 1988 to 1994.

Less than four months after the wedding, Hill and McGraw announced they were expecting their first child together. They then welcomed daughter Grace into the world in May 1997, and following that, the couple welcomed daughters Maggie in 1998 and Audrey in 2001.

“Tim and I are strict parents, but we’ve taught them to stay independent, even at a very young age. We want them to be able to think for themselves,” Hill told People in 2006. “I’m able to shift gears from mom to performer to mom pretty quickly. It doesn’t bother me when the kids run in while I’m getting dressed. And in terms of coming offstage, the minute you walk through the door and your kids run into your arms, you’re smacked in the face with a dose of reality: It’s like, this is my real life.”

Grace is now 27, Maggie is 26 and Audrey is 23. All three of them post pictures with their parents on their respective social media accounts.

Touring, albums & ‘1883’: the couple’s professional highlights

Hill and McGraw’s first-ever tour was in 1996. Following that, they reunited on the tour stage once again in 2000, 2006 and 2016. They have also performed together at the 2008 CMT Awards, the 2014 ACM Awards and even released a 2017 album entitled The Rest of Our Life

Perhaps their biggest team-up, though, was in 2021, when they starred as James and Margaret Dutton in the Yellowstone prequel, 1883.

“We’ve never done anything like this together,” Hill told The Hollywood Reporter in 2022. “Tim’s a legit actor and I felt the only way to bring it as authentically as I possibly could was to experience James and Margaret for the first time on set. It would have been hard to separate the two for me. It seemed to work, because Tim still surprised me when we were working together—he did things as James that I didn’t expect from him. I needed that in order to be as natural as possible.”

McGraw added to that, saying, “My thought was: People are going to have a hard time overcoming seeing Tim and Faith onscreen. We wanted to shed as much of that baggage as we could. Inherently, our relationship and our chemistry and who we are together — it’s going to be there. But we wanted to keep it as real as possible for those characters.”

Sadly, spoiler alert: both of their characters died at the end of the show, so there is very little chance that they will reunite in another Taylor Sheridan project—unless the Yellowstone franchise decides to explore the Duttons further back in time.

Hill and McGraw are still together to this day, living in Nashville, Tennessee, and often gush about each other on social media. They have been married for 29 years and are both 57.
