Jane Fonda Recalls Touring With Dolly Parton — And the Time She Got More Than Tipsy on Moonshine

Tags:

Dolly Parton is known for having Southern hospitality to spare, something Jane Fonda learned firsthand while on tour with her after the pair became friends on the set of 9 to 5. The Oscar-winning actress appeared as one of the country queen’s opening acts, though she kicked things off by singing backup for Parton at the Grand Ole Opry.

At least, that’s what she sort of remembers about their time on tour together. Fonda shared the story back in 2017 while visiting James Corden on The Late Late Show with Lily Tomlin, according to Billboard. After admitting no one recognized her on the famous performance venue’s stage when she stood behind Parton, Fonda explained that her memory of the start of the tour remains a bit hazy thanks to one of Parton’s relatives. “It’s hard to say because early on… Well, you know how the trip started?” she began. “She had me fly to Nashville and have me sing backup for her at the Grand Ole Opry. But then we went on her tour bus and one of the first stops was at her cousin’s still in the Ozarks because she wanted me to know what really good white lightning was.”

Apparently, Parton’s cousin liked to let his filtered moonshine sit out longer than usual to make sure it was extra potent. “I didn’t know I was drunk!” Fonda revealed. “I was drunk for 10 days and didn’t know it.” Yikes! That is some seriously strong moonshine if Fonda didn’t even realize how hard it really hit her.

Fonda likely made up for it with plenty of other fun memories while on tour with Parton. We can just imagine all the hijinx those two got up to back in the day! Here’s hoping the pals share even more entertaining tales from their time together when they start promoting the reported sequel to their hit workplace comedy.
