How Princess Diana’s Family Continues to Honor Her at Althorp, Her Final Resting Place

Tags:

Princess Diana‘s burial grounds at her family home, Althorp, will soon be flooded with hundreds of thousands of tourists hoping to catch a glimpse of the princess’ final resting place. Considering her lasting memory and the profound changes she effected, it’s not surprising that we’re still talking about such a beloved woman as we approach the 21st anniversary of Princess Diana’s death. It touches our hearts to know that those who loved her most — including her brother and sons — are doing what they can to keep her memory alive and well at Althorp.

Althorp Estate is located in Northamptonshire, roughly 70 miles from London, where it sits on a lush 13,000 acres. The property itself, which was built in 1508, stretches 550 acres, and boasts an eyebrow-raising 90 rooms. It’s been the home of the Spencer family for nearly 500 years and 19 generations. Princess Diana’s brother Charles, the Ninth Earl Spencer, has been the head of the house for the last 23 years.

Because Althorp is inhabited, it is only open to the public during specific months. Even then, though, visitors cannot access certain parts of the home. Right now, Althorp is open until August 24. After that, it will be open for another two weeks, from August 27 to September 9, and then again only on the third and fourth weekend of September.

Prince Harry, Prince William, Kate Middleton, and young Prince George and Princess Charlotte attended a private service in July 2017 to rededicate Princess Diana’s grave. Princess Diana was buried on a small island in the middle of Round Oval lake. The exact location of Princess Diana’s grave, however, is a secret, as her family hoped to finally give her the privacy she never had when she was alive. Tourists can instead visit a modest temple dedicated to the late royal.

Last year, Princess Diana’s brother Charles announced a multimillion dollar renovation that would update Round Oval Lake just in time for the 20th anniversary of Princess Diana’s death. He had 36 trees planted — one for each year of her life — as well as hundreds of white roses, which were her favorite flowers, and water lilies.

It will be impossible to forget what Princess Diana accomplished in her life. Though the dedications to her at her family home might never truly communicate all that she did to improve the lives of those around her, they are a beautiful token of appreciation, love, and recognition for a woman we all miss dearly.
