Princess Diana’s Favorite Tiara Has Been Spotted for the First Time in 25 Years
Princess Diana’s style was legendary, but of all the fabulous outfits she ever wore, the one thing she rarely rocked was a tiara. During her life, she apparently only wore two tiaras: the Cambridge Lover’s Knot and the Spencer Tiara. (The former was a gift from Queen Elizabeth, and the latter was a Spencer family heirloom.) Kate Middleton has worn the Cambridge Lover’s Knot before, but the Spencer Tiara hasn’t been seen by the public since 1993 — until now.
The Spencer Tiara is a beautiful, diamond-encrusted headpiece with looping hearts and stars. Diana wore her family’s tiara often when she was married to Charles, only letting it out of her possession in 1989 when she lent it to Victoria Lockwood, her brother Charles’ then-fiancée, for Lockwood’s wedding. The last time the public saw Diana in her stunning headpiece was when Malaysia’s head of state visited. In 1997, the tiara was returned to the Spencer family after the beloved royal’s tragic death.
Twenty-five years later, the Spencer family finally released the tiara from hiding when Celia McCorquodale, Princess Diana’s niece, tied the knot. McCorquodale wed George Woodhouse in a gorgeous lace gown that reminds us of both Meghan Markle’s and Kate Middleton’s wedding dresses: It has delicate lace like the Duchess of Cambridge’s Alexander McQueen creation, but the neckline is reminiscent of Meghan’s Givenchy frock. Whether you agree or disagree, one thing’s for sure: McCorquodale sparkled on her big day.
Celia is the most recent Spencer family member to don the family’s tiara, but she isn’t the only one. In addition to Spencer-to-be Victoria Lockwood, Celia’s mother, Sarah McCorquodale, and aunt, Jane Fellowes (Princess Diana’s two sisters) also wore the Spencer Tiara at their nuptials.
Neither Kate Middleton nor Meghan Markle has worn the Spencer Tiara, but we might see it happen sometime in the future — they did marry into the Spencer family, after all. Fortunately, the queen’s tiara collection has enough sparkle to hold us over until then.
