Savannah Guthrie Shares the Bible Verse That ‘Lives In’ Her — And the One She’s Teaching Her Daughter

Despite having to wake up in the wee hours of the morning to prep for work every day, TODAY co-anchor Savannah Guthrie is always ready to greet viewers with her sunny attitude and beaming smile. She recently revealed that it’s not just coffee putting pep in her step — she also relies heavily on her faith and a few favorite Bible verses.

“I love a new day stretching out in front of me,” Guthrie told Guideposts magazine. “There’s the verse, ‘His mercies are new every morning.’ I feel that.” She added, “I’m always praying in some sense, always in a conversation with God. Lately it’s in the back of the car on the way to work.”

But that’s just one of many passages she thinks of on a daily basis. “Psalm 23 lives in me,” she said. “I have recited it to myself thousands of times and reflected on it morning, noon, and night.”

You might already be familiar with the popular verse which reads, “The Lord is my shepherd; I shall not want. He makes me lie down in green pastures. He leads me beside still waters. He restores my soul.” Guthrie said a cousin shared it with her when she was a little girl and that it’s stuck with her ever since.

The anchor also shared another verse she’s been drawn to from the Book of Zephaniah: “The Lord your God is with you, the mighty warrior who saves. He will take great delight in you; in his love he will no longer rebuke you, but will rejoice over you with singing.”

Guthrie mentioned this passage while sharing how she’s passing her love of faith down to her children. “My daughter is six and half with a phenomenal memory,” she said. “I think this is your verse and I think you should memorize it.”

She went on to say, “I love the verse because it’s a moment in which you allow yourself to just soak in and remain in God’s love. That’s so powerful. When you feel beloved and delighted in and rejoiced over, how can you do anything but go out into the world and spread that around? It’s the kind of verse that’s deeply fulfilling and nurturing and nourishing, but it also has an amazing and immediate effect in the world around you.”

It’s no wonder Guthrie seems to radiate so much love and positivity every day — even before the sun’s up!
