Using This Kitchen Tool When Making Avocado Toast Takes It to the Next Level


Avocado toast is the quintessential breakfast dish if you ask me. I love to start my mornings with a thick slice of toast topped with creamy avocado slices and an egg — after that much needed cup of coffee, of course. However, cutting that boiled egg into pieces doesn’t always give me the perfect egg-to-avocado ratio across my whole slice of toast. Recently, I tried a grated boiled egg hack that gets the egg into bite-sized pieces in a snap!

This handy tip from recipe developer Sarah Thomas-Drawbaugh’s TikTok (@healthyishfoods) involves shredding a hard boiled egg using a microplane cheese grater until it resembles cheese flakes. While this trick might sound odd, it takes seconds to do and ensures that the egg yolk and white gets evenly distributed across the bread.

My Thoughts on This Simple Grated Boiled Egg Hack

In the video, Thomas-Drawbaugh first toasts a thick slice of crusty, white bread for about three to four minutes. While the bread is in the toaster, she cuts half of a ripe avocado into thin slices. Once the toast is golden brown, she lets it cool for one minute before smearing it with two tablespoons of Japanese Kewpie mayonnaise.

From there, Thomas-Drawbaugh places avocado slices on the toast and grates one hard boiled egg over the top. (Psst: Take a peek at our helpful guide on how to boil an egg correctly every single time!) To garnish, she sprinkles the toast with a pinch of salt and pepper and a dollop of Sriracha. I was a little hesitant on whether grating the egg would make a difference compared to chopping it. It did, however, because it was faster to break down into bite-sized pieces. And as I was shredding the egg, I noticed some tiny bits that weren’t shredded left on the microplane grater. I sprinkled those on top at the very end to make sure that it didn’t go to waste.

Also, I omitted the Kewpie mayo and swapped Sriracha for chili flakes because I didn’t have the hot sauce on hand. Still, it had all the flavors and textures I know and love — nutty, creamy, and earthy, all wrapped in one bite!

Overall, this easy tweak really did take my normal avocado toast to the next level. It makes me excited to use my cheese grater for other things, like whipping up a creamier egg salad or spreading cold butter on toast
