Kate Middleton Satisfies Her Sweet Tooth with a Sticky Treat, According to Former Royal Chef

Unless you’re someone who doesn’t care much for sweets in general, you’ve likely got one or two favorite treats you enjoy indulging on every once in awhile. For the Duchess of Cambridge, that comes in the form of sticky toffee pudding, according to former royal chef Darren McGrady. While sharing his recipe for the gooey dessert with PureWow, the man who’s cooked for the likes of Queen Elizabeth, Princess Diana, and both Prince William and Harry revealed it as a favorite of Kate’s. She apparently likes it around the holidays, but we can imagine the duchess chowing down on this dessert all year round — especially when pregnancy cravings kicked in with her three children

The first thing we should probably clear up: Pudding is a lot different in the United Kingdom than it is over here in the US. Rather than a jiggly, semi-liquid substance, British puddings are more similar to a small cake that’s also incredibly moist. You might expect this royal recipe to be rich in chocolate or other popular sweet flavors, but the tasty confection relies on chopped dates to give it a fruity kick. Plus, lots of sugar! That includes a creamy, buttery brown sugar sauce drizzled over the top of the whole thing. For those with an extra-strong sweet tooth, you can also add a dollop of whipped cream, ice cream, or clotted cream (Kate’s favorite) on the side to make this the ultimate dessert option.

Kate isn’t the only royal family member who likes sugary baked goods, of course. The Queen is notorious for her daily slices of chocolate cake, and Princess Diana was known to sneak in plenty of treats for her boys when they were younger. There’s a good chance Meghan Markle is just as fond of recipes like this — not just as an amateur cook herself, but potentially craving sweets with her own royal baby growing in her belly right now, too. Just thinking about the sisters-in-law exchanging pregnancy snacks and tips is almost as sweet as digging into a pudding! You can find the pudding recipe and more in Darren McGrady’s cookbook, The Royal Chef at Home: Easy Seasonal Entertaining ($18.50, Amazon).
