What is a Blackstone griddle?
If you’re new to the Blackstone griddle, it’s a flat top cooking surface made from carbon steel. This material is similar to cast iron in that it can withstand high heat cooking. But, what sets it apart is that it’s smoother, lighter in weight and heats up faster than cast iron. This griddle comes in sizes ranging from 17 inches to 36 inches, and it’s available to buy on the brand’s website and various home improvement stores. One of the main reasons why this cooking tool is going viral is because you can cook almost any dish on it.
Best foods to cook on a Blackstone
Nicole Johnson, founder and recipe developer at OrWhateverYouDo.com, describes the various dishes that are great to use the Blackstone for. “It is perfect for making large batches for big groups, and maintains its temperature much better than other cooking tools, making it ideal for stir fry, fried rice and searing meat,” she says. In addition to these savory dishes, she loves using it to whip up breakfast foods such as omelets, bacon and French toast. So, you can turn to this tool for nearly all of your breakfast, lunch and dinner needs!
How to season a Blackstone griddle
Prior to cooking on this griddle, you’ll want to season the surface. This process has three main purposes: it creates nonstick coating on the griddle, it helps enhance the flavor of dishes cooked on it and it prevents the material from rusting. Below, Nathan Lippy, chef and Blackstone pro, shares five easy steps to seasoning this griddle before using it for the first time.
- Wipe the surface with warm soapy water.
- Heat griddle on high until there’s a change in color, about 15 minutes.
- Add two to three tablespoons of griddle seasoning to the surface. Carefully spread it into a smooth, even layer using tongs and a paper towel.
- Repeat the previous step two or three more times. (Note: Avoid doing this process more than five times as it could cause too much griddle seasoning to build up on the surface.)
- Now, the griddle is ready to use.

Chef’s easy tip for cleaning a Blackstone griddle
Johnson notes that keeping your Blackstone in tip-top shape between uses is easier than you think. “After cooking, just water and scrape any remaining food residue off of the griddle, wipe down with paper towels, and then spread a thin layer of oil on the surface before storing,” she says. This may take several minutes, but it’s worth it for ensuring your griddle will last a long time!
