3 Ways to Tame Those Frizzy Gray Hairs This Fall and Winter

Tags:

The cold temperatures will be in full effect before we know it. Although it gives us a reason to snuggle on the couch with a mug of hot cocoa watching our favorite movie, one of the drawbacks with the chillier months is that our hair can become very dry and frizzy, especially if you have grays. Luckily, getting frizz under control is much simpler than you might think.

We spoke to Eliza Pineda, in-house hair expert for Mayraki Professional, to get her insight on why gray hair tends to get drier and frizzier during this time of the year. Plus, she gives her product recommendations for adding some moisture and shine!

As we age, our body produces less sebum and melanin, an oil and amino acid combo that gives hair its pigment and moisture. As those levels decline, we get more gray hair and are also prone to more brittle hair. The cold weather can worsen this hair woe because of the lack of humidity and moisture in the air: “Gray hair is already dry in nature and can get even drier in the cold weather,” says Pineda.

Treat Your Hair

While we can’t control the weather or getting older, we can take her “inside out” approach to nixing frizzy grays first by applying more nourishing and hydrating products. She recommends hair treatments like Mayraki Professional’s Silky Smooth Proactive Hair Repairing Treatment (Buy at Hairmayraki.com, $59) to improve texture of your strands. “This will prevent dryness and frizz long term and may even reactivate melanin production in your follicles, which will turn your gray hairs back into your natural color,” she says.

If you are looking for a more affordable option, Pineda notes that applying a light hair oil like argan oil every day can tame frizz, keep hair hydrated, and add shine. A brand like Kate Blanc Cosmetics 100% Organic Argan Oil (Buy on Amazon $13.99) can be used on damp or dry hair by simply working three to four drops throughout your hair, scalp, and split ends every day. Also, she says you can’t go wrong with adding anti-frizz products to your haircare routine. Stick to Silk

Another way to reduce fall frizz is by not exposing your gray hair to certain materials that can dry it out even more. She recommends using a silk pillowcase (Buy on Amazon, $20.99) or a silk hair wrap (Buy on Amazon, $19.59) when sleeping to retain your hair’s natural oils and prevent them from getting absorbed by the cotton from your pillow. This hair trick was one that Jackie Kennedy Onassis used often to keep her hair looking full and flawless!

Choose the Right Towel

Pineda also suggests drying your hair with a microfiber towel (Buy at Hairmayraki.com, $9.95) after washing instead of one made with a terry cloth material. This helps reduce friction that causes frizz and the microfiber fabric effectively absorbs water so that your will hair dry out evenly. She says it’s a better option than blow drying because gray hair is prone to heat damage and lead to frizz and breakage when it goes through a rapid temperature change.

With these easy tips, you can just throw on a cozy hat when you need a little extra warmth, not when you’re trying to hide anything!
