5 Low-Light Indoor Plants That are Perfect For Dimly Lit Rooms

Tags:

Not everyone is lucky enough to have a home that is drenched in an abundance of natural light. For most of us, there is at least one room in the house that is dimly lit and in turn, often looks a little dull. Thankfully there is a range of indoor plants that will still thrive in rooms that lack light — like bathrooms or offices — and that also require little maintenance — perfect for those of us with busy lifestyles or for gardening novices.

If you’ve been concerned about introducing an indoor plant to a room because it doesn’t receive much light, check out these hardy yet stylish varieties that don’t require full sunshine.

One of the most resilient indoor plants of the bunch and an increasingly popular variety, snake plants can be left in low light conditions and only require watering occasionally. This sculptural plant is not only rich in color but has toxin-fighting qualities too. Keep in mind that this plant is toxic to cats and dogs.

Devil’s Ivy grows well in both bright, indirect light as well as low light. This beautiful plant thrives indoors and can be grown in pots or vases of water. When grown in the soil you should allow the potting mix to dry out in between watering. You can also prune and take cuttings and place them in glass jars filled with water to encourage rooting. This trailing plant adds a stylish addition to a home.

Peace Lily

Peace lilies are one of the most beautiful indoor plants, are easy to care for, and also act as effective air purifiers. They like low to medium light and don’t like to be overwatered, so if you forget about them for a week they’ll still reward you with great looks.

Cast Iron Plant

The Aspidistra elatior is aptly named ‘cast-iron plant’ for its ability to withstand even the most adverse conditions. The lower the light the less often a cast-iron plant needs to be watered and when exposed to too much light the leaves turn brown. Its evergreen leaves that rise up from tough, rhizomatous roots, create a lush and leafy display indoors.

Zanzibar gems are the closest plants to superheroes because they’re practically indestructible. They are known for their ability to withstand very low light conditions. This tropical perennial plant has attractive glossy, emerald green leaves and is drought tolerant.
