Get Rid of Stubborn Stickers With a Dollop of This Fridge Staple

Whether you’re picking away at labels on jars you want to reuse or the barcode plastered on a new product you just bought, trying to remove stickers can be a nightmare. Luckily, you probably already have something in your fridge that can make the process a whole lot easier: mayonnaise.

We know it sounds strange to suggest slathering mayo onto anything other than a couple slices of bread, but it really can help you out of this sticky situation. Just think about it for a second: What is mayonnaise made out of? Most recipes call for a simple mix of egg yolks, oil, and vinegar (or sometimes lemon juice). You may have seen people recommend using fats like oil or acids like vinegar to remove stickers before, so it only makes sense that the combination found in mayo will work even better at knocking out adhesives.

All you have to do is use enough mayonnaise to cover your sticker, then let it sit for a while to break down the sticky substance. Some say to give it as little as 15 minutes while others say up to an hour. It will really depend on the strength of the sticker, so you can start with the lower end of the timing and work up until the gunk is totally removed.

Take a look below to see how well it works:

Even though it took him a couple tries, it was still a lot easier than just scraping away at it. This mayo method is also perfect for removing adhesives from things you don’t want to heat up like with Martha Stewart’s hair dryer hack to remove stickers

That said, we understand some folks out there might not be keen on mayo in general, much less spreading it all over their belongings. In that case, you can try a two ingredient DIY “goo gone” recipe — all you need is a bit of baking soda and vegetable oil.

Getting rid of stickers might be a small problem in the grand scheme of things, but it’s nice to have at least one less frustration in our lives!
