Volunteers Are Needed to Knit Warm Red Hats for Newborns

If knitting is one of your favorite hobbies, here’s your chance to use your talent for a great cause. The American Heart Association (AHA) is calling for volunteers to knit and crochet red hats for newborn babies born in February at participating hospitals.

It’s all part of AHA’s “Little Hats, Big Hearts” campaign. Since February is American Heart Month, the campaign has a mission to raise awareness about heart health, starting at day one with newborn bundles of joy and their mothers. Thousands of newborns at the participating hospitals will receive the special knit hats as a reminder to their moms to live a heart-healthy life — and encourage their children to follow their example down the line.

Can you imagine what a powerful statement that makes to these new moms and babies? As any mom knows, there are few moments in life that are more powerful than the birth of a child. To give a woman a hat like this for her baby is to tell her that she has the influence and spirit to get her kid off to a good start in life. A healthy heart is paramount to good health overall, so we’re sure this will inspire countless new moms to take this much-needed action for their beloved kids.

The best part is that the only thing standing between you and helping them out with the cause is your favorite knitting needles sitting in the drawer. Ready to take them out? Visit the American Heart Association page for more information on deadlines and where to send your hats.

P.S. They also accept donations of yarn!

But don’t forget about your own health while inspiring others to look after theirs! Find out how to eat healthy when you’re on a budget:
