Loving Strangers Encircled a Crying Mother and Her Raging Toddler at an Airport

Traveling can be a pain, especially if you’re flying with small children. From standing in long lines and trying to wrangle heavy bags through crowds to the seemingly endless amounts of waiting around that must be done, children and airports just don’t mix. Understanding that the mom struggle is real, a team of strangers joined together to help a pregnant mother who was traveling alone with a rowdy toddler.

Onlooker Beth Bornstein Dunnington described the scene in a Facebook post, revealing a truly beautiful moment between a few kind travelers and one very frustrated mother.

“Something extraordinary at LAX today,” Dunnington wrote. “A toddler who looked to be eighteen or so months old was having a total meltdown, running between the seats, kicking and screaming, then lying on the ground, refusing to board the plane. The mother finally sat down on the floor and put her head in her hands, with her kid next to her still having a meltdown, and started crying.”

Thankfully, a group of empathetic women surrounded the woman and her child, forming a circle around the two. Several in the group then began to sing songs to distract the crying toddler, while others dug through their purses for a toy or a snack to calm the little boy down. Dunnington helped console the child by singing “The Itsy Bitsy Spider.”

“It was so gorgeous. There was no discussion and no one knew anyone else, but we were able to calm them both down, and she got her child on the plane,” she wrote. “Only women approached.”

Afterwards, Dunnington said the group of strangers went back to their separate seats, acting as though nothing had happened at all.

“We were strangers, gathering to solve something. It occurred to me that a circle of women, with a mission, can save the world. I will never forget that moment.”

What a powerful lesson about the kindness of strangers! Since Dunnington made her initial post, several users have commented on her experience, noting that her kind deed will forever be remembered.

“I’m crying reading this. We’ve all been there as mothers,” one user wrote. “A circle of women is the most powerful structure in the world,” another added.

We’re not crying, you’re crying!
