Once Clara Leung realized she could earn extra money growing and selling houseplants, she started raking in the cash! Here’s how she does it.

“For as long as I can remember, I’ve loved plants. I work as an accountant, but I always wanted to share my plant passion with others. Two years ago, a woman posted a dieffenbachia plant for sale on Facebook Marketplace and said that if she couldn’t sell it that night, she would throw it out. I immediately purchased it, nurtured it back to life, separated it into two pots and posted one for sale on the marketplace. Within minutes, I had a buyer, so I decided I could turn this into a business and launched Clara’s Green House (ClarasGreenHouse.com).

“I sell houseplant sets, which include the plant, soil and planters (I have different shapes, sizes and colors, and I send photos to customers so they can find one they like). My plants have leaf shapes and textures that work with feng shui, an ancient Chinese practice that involves setting up the home in a way that allows for positive energy to flow through. I also sell homemade soil that lasts for over 10 years!

“So far, I’ve sold over 2,000 plants! I spend 20 hours a week on the business and make up to $3,000 a month — money I put back into the business, into savings and donate to charitable organizations. It’s been so rewarding, especially because it helps people. One customer who had been suffering from chronic seizures purchased some aloe and split leaf plants, and within a year her seizures were gone!”
