You Can Live in Buckingham Palace

If you don't mind doing the Queen's dishes.

Even with all the recent royal drama, we can still daydream about living in a grand home like Buckingham Palace. Go ahead and take a moment right now to imagine walking around those historic halls — and maybe bumping into a member of the royal family while you’re at it. Sure, that type of fantasy usually involves meeting our own Prince Charming who sweeps us away into this glamorous lifestyle, but that’s not the only way to get a glimpse of life inside the palace walls.

No, I’m not talking about booking a stay at Prince Charles’s regal bed and breakfast (although I wouldn’t pass that up either). Buckingham Palace is currently looking for a new staff member to join their catering team. The official website lists the role as someone who will “assist with food preparation and displays, and maintain a clean environment, all of which will help ensure everything is ready for a busy daily service.”

That does mean doing Queen Elizabeth’s dishes on a regular basis, but she’ll repay you with an £18,109.07 annual salary (roughly $23,500 USD) and your very own live-in quarters at the palace. The payment might not sound like a lot, but it’s really just icing on the cake. You’d get a room within Buckingham Palace all to yourself, just for washing the Queen’s pots and pans!

The job listing doesn’t even require previous catering experience in order to apply. They’ll offer “excellent training” for whoever gets the gig. You will, however, need good communication skills and “a desire to deliver fantastic customer service.” They describe the ideal candidate as someone who is “a natural team player, happy to get involved, use initiative and work with your colleagues to achieve a smooth daily service.” Nothing but the best for the Windsors, of course.

OK, so it’s definitely not the most elegant job, but it’s still pretty darn tempting. I would personally sign up for it in a heartbeat, but sadly, they’re looking for someone who is legally able to work within the United Kingdom (the nerve!). I would start looking into visa options, but I doubt anything would go through before the posting closes on January 27, 2020.

If you or someone you know already lives in the UK, though, it might be worth sending in an application. The rest of us can just keep daydreaming in the meantime.
