Queen Elizabeth Has a New Dog — And Her Name Is So Sweet
It’s never too late in life to find a new furry friend! This month, Queen Elizabeth welcomed a new dog into her family: a prize-winning cocker spaniel.
This might come as a surprise to those of us who remember the Queen’s preferred breed. The monarch adores Corgis. According to the American Kennel Club, she’s one of the most prolific and dedicated Pembroke Welsh Corgi breeders and ambassadors, having owned more than 30 in her lifetime. She currently owns two corgi puppies and a Dorgi (a cross between a Daschund and a Welsh Corgi).
However, the Queen most likely made an exception in honor of Prince William and Kate Middleton. The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge are well-known cocker spaniel fans. The Duchess’ brother, James Middleton, breeds cocker spaniels and has gifted the royal couple two dogs. Prince William and Kate’s most recent addition to their family — an eight-month-old cocker black cocker spaniel — was one such gift. What a sweet tribute, then, that the Queen’s latest dog is a family favorite!
Where did the Queen’s new dog come from?
As Country Living reports, the Queen adopted a 4 year old Pedigree Wolferton Drama. A pedigree dog is one that has parents of the same breed (and documentation to show it). The dog is named “Lissy” in the monarch’s honor, and recently won the 91st Kennel Club Cocker Spaniel Championship.
Ian Openshaw, who handled Lissy during the competition, was incredibly proud. “Winning the Championship was the greatest day of my life,” he said. “It is a true honor to handle dogs for Her Majesty and it has been a lifetime ambition to win for the Queen.
“Lissy has always been a very good dog, excellent at all working elements, and she is particularly fantastic on a runner. She used to be a bit of a monkey when she was younger, but she has really come into her own now. She is a great all-rounder.” We are sure Her Majesty is enjoying her growing family of pups!
