Did you make a New Year’s resolution related to nutrition that hasn’t worked out thus far? Are you looking to get back on track with weight loss after a chaotic start to the year? March is the perfect time to get back on track (or start!) because it’s National Nutrition Month!

Discover how the month came to be, what the theme is for 2024’s National Nutrition Month, and the benefits of meal planning. Plus, we’re sharing our favorite meal-prepping and health-related tools, daily supplements, and more to get you started on the track to better habits.

National Nutrition Month 2024: Beyond the Table

National Nutrition Month was established in 1973 by the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics as a way to educate the public about their food choices and encourage positive eating habits and physical activity. The theme changes annually. This year’s National Nutrition Month theme is “Beyond the Table,” which highlights the “farm-to-fork” aspect of nutrition.

Making sustainable food choices is another aspect of National Nutrition Month 2024. From how we can decrease food waste to the various places we procure food, store it, prep it, and eat it, this March is all about creating sustainable food habits.

How Meal Planning Can Lead to a Healthier Lifestyle

Meal planning is just one of the many aspects highlighted throughout National Nutrition Month. Planning or prepping your meals ahead of time can look a lot of different ways. For some, it may mean cleaning your fruits and vegetables so they’re ready to eat when you are. For others, meal prepping looks like cooking and portioning out food for the week.

Why do all of this? There are several benefits to planning out your meals ahead of time.

  1. Lessen food waste. You can take an inventory of what you have around your home, then make a list of the things you need to create balanced meals and buy them. In this way, you’re lowering the odds of wasting food because you know exactly what you have versus need.
  2. Weight loss. One meal planning study found an association between meal planning and lower odds of being overweight in women. Being intentional about the foods we eat and mindful of portions gives us a better idea of how much we’re actually eating and can lead to weight loss.
  3. Save money. Having a game plan can lessen the desire to want to order out foods that are usually full of processed ingredients, but doing so can also save money in the long run.
