A total solar eclipse will take place on April 8, 2024. In North America, the sky will darken as though it were dusk or dawn in Mexico, the United States, and Canada when the moon blocks the face of the sun. The last total solar eclipse was in August 2017 — do you still have your protective glasses? Here’s where you can find proper eye protection ahead of the total solar eclipse next week.

NASA Approved Solar Eclipse Glasses

The sun might be blocked by the moon during a total eclipse, but that doesn’t mean it’s safe to look directly at the glowing ball of light. To do so safely, you need specialized eye protection. According to NASA’s eye safety protocols, looking at the sun through a camera lens, binoculars, or telescope without the proper filter can instantly cause severe injury to the eyes.

Total Eclipse Eye Safety

Here’s how NASA recommends keeping your eyes safe during the solar eclipse:

  • Look at the sun through solar eclipse glasses or a handheld solar viewer (NASA’s site has instructions on how to make DIY solar eclipse glasses!)
  • You can view the eclipse directly without proper eye protection when the moon completely obscures the sun’s bright face – you’ll know it’s safe when you can no longer see any part of the sun through your eclipse glasses or solar viewer.
  • Whenever the sun is present, you should have your eclipse glasses on.
