What type of dress should be for the mother of the bride?

To simplify finding what type of dress is best for the mother of the bride, I reached out to Julie Sabatino, the Founder of The Stylish Bride. She’s been helping brides (and their families) find their wedding fashion footing since 2002, and knows everything the mother of the bride needs to consider. “Being honest about what makes you comfortable is the best thing,” she says, about selecting a dress.

“I think it’s important to try many things on, critique them, but then come back to what you feel the most comfortable wearing.”

When shopping the best plus size mother of the bride dresses for you, consider the event venue, season, and whether the dress code calls for semi formal, formal, or black tie. This will help narrow your search.

“Semi formal is the same as cocktail. [Men] can wear jackets and ties, ladies will wear a cocktail dress that’s nice but not super formal. Formal means guys in suits, and ladies in nicer dresses. Black tie is men in tuxedos, and women in long or tea-length dresses.”

Some moms question the best color to wear or if they should match the bridal party. Fortunately, there’s no rule stating you must wear neon pink just because the maid of honor is. “You don’t have to worry about matching the bridesmaid dresses,” reassures Sabatino. “The reality is that there are very few times when the moms are in pictures with the bridesmaids, unless of course they are [related] to them. Otherwise, I can’t think of one instance where I saw the parents in a wedding party shot.”

If you’re curious about what color is most popular with mother of the brides, navy blue, like in this gorgeous Monique Lhuillier gown, is a favorite choice. “Navy is always safe, and goes with pretty much everything. It’s flattering, but not black. Other shades of blues are also a safe, and generally looks good on most people.”

How far in advance should you order a mother of the bride dress?

It depends on whether you’re going to work with a designer or shop a store like Nordstrom or Amazon. The benefit of working with a designer is that they make alterations, like adding sleeves, which some searching the best plus size mother of the bride dresses want. However, it’s expensive, and your choices may be limited depending on the season.

Shopping online can provide more options, regardless of when the wedding is. If you give yourself time — Sabatino recommends three to four months — a dress can be brought to a tailor for minor adjustments, like hemming. And even places like David Bridal will do alterations for you, even if you didn’t purchase your dress from them.

When ordering your dress you’ll find that some retailers include a W next a number. It can be confusing, but helpful to understand. “In a lot of ways, sizing charts are obsolete,” says Sabatino. “The big difference between a 16 and a 16W is that the W indicates that it’s a plus size. That means the pattern may be a little bit different, because it was adjusted to fit a curvier woman.”

Best Plus Size Mother Of The Bride Dresses
Rent The Runway/Canva

Although regular sizes (sometimes indicated by the letter R) can go to a 22, sizes that have the W attached tend to have a looser fit. One of my favorite places to find the best plus size mother of the bride dresses is Rent The Runway. Along with having designer gowns going up to size 22W, you can see how other women of similar size and proportions look in the same outfit. You can become a member, or do a one-time rental and return after the event.

If you’re planning on losing weight for the wedding, Sabatino suggests doing fittings closer to the big day. If you’re planning on wearing this Ever-Pretty Embroidered Mermaid Dress, for example, but want to cut 10 pounds first, see your tailor a month before the wedding to get the best fit.

What color is the mother of the bride supposed to wear to the wedding?

Depending on who you ask, a mother of the bride should avoid wearing black, metallics, or red. However, there are times when all of these can work. “If it’s a black-tie wedding in a city, black [is] more appropriate than if you’re in a beach or garden,” says Sabatino.

One of my favorite best plus size mother of the bride dresses is the Foiled Draped Mini-Dress from Adrianna Papell. It incorporates black, pink, and gold, and would be lovely for a semi-formal affair. It has drapey sleeves, and can even be paired with shimmery shawl.

For obvious reasons, white, ivory, and similar colors should be avoided. Although Sabatino has encountered brides who don’t mind their mother’s wearing cream, it may leave an icky taste in guests mouths. If your daughter is wearing a champagne or blush color, steering clear of similar hues would also be smart.

Can mother of bride and mother of groom wear the same color dress?

Mothers of the bride and groom don’t need to wear the same color dress. Interestingly, in the past it was tradition for the mother of the bride to pick her dress first, and then notify the groom’s mom on her chosen outfit. But as Sabatino explains, few people follow it. “I find a lot of people don’t even know about [it], so it goes out the window.”

Although much is dictated by who’s paying the wedding, she suggests having an open dialogue with the mother of the groom. More than likely she’ll appreciate having a heads-up, and everything tends to run smoother when both parties are on the same page.

Can the mother of the bride wear a short dress?

As with most colors, there’s no set in stone rule that the mother of the bride can’t wear a short dress. However, it’s important not to pick an outfit that distracts from the bride. “A good real of thumb when it comes to weddings is if you’re questioning it or you feel kind of uncomfortable, don’t do it,” says Sabatino.

Fortunately, some of the best plus size mother of the bride dresses are tea or midi-length, giving some options if you’re not a fan of floor length gowns. One of my favorites is the Surplice Neck Tea Length. It hits a little below the knee, comes in rich navy, and has a dramatic bow. Its full satin skirt is perfect for formal weddings, and offers some camouflage to the hips and middle.

Many mothers favor dresses with sleeves, since the arm area can be a place of insecurity. However, Sabatino encourages not to close yourself off to sleeveless designs. “Don’t rule out options that don’t already have [sleeves], she advices. “Also [look for] interesting ways to providing arm coverage for yourself.”

This can be as simple as adding a balero jacket, shrug or shawl. At the end of the day, it’s about picking something you feel good in. “If you can be true to yourself, it’s the best advice. It goes for brides, it goes for moms, it goes for everybody. If you feel comfortable in your outfit — including shoes — that confidence is going to come through.”

  • Pros

This dress is elegant, feminine, and absolutely befitting any mother of the bride. Whether you’re heavier on top or have larger hips, this plus size navy lace sleeve gown from Monique Lhuiller will complement your attributes, while camouflaging the areas you want it to. The floor length skirt flares slightly at the natural waistline, while the V-neck draws attention upward to the detail in the sleeves. There are pockets on the side — perfect for stashing your crying tissues — and if you’re on the shorter side, you can get this in petite. It runs a little small, so we recommend sizing up, but it’s still our top pick for the best plus size mother of the bride dresses list. Promising review: “Well made, light, and easy to wear. The bodice fit a little loose at the top but it didn’t detract from the overall elegance of this lovely gown. This was my first RTR experience and I was very pleased!”

R&M Richards Plus Size Hi Lo Sequins Elegant Gown

  • Pros

Although your princess is entering a new phase of her life, you’re still the queen of your household, and this dress will make you feel like royalty. The full ballroom skirt accentuates the hips to create a feminine shape, and provides lots of movement as you go from your table to the dance floor. It also has pockets, where you can keep your phone or tissues if you don’t want to carry about a bag. A personal favorite on our best plus size mother of the bride dresses list, this gown features a long, dramatic adjustable bow, giving the illusion of height. The bodice offers short sleeves and includes sequins in an intricate honeycomb pattern. You’ll sparkle from the church to the banquet hall, all the way to the after party. You’re going to that, right?

Promising review: “This was a real dress. I was so happy with it…The waist is full and very forgiving. The lining was just as beautiful as the outside. It’s a larger size than I thought it’d be. I’m usually a 24, and ordered the 22, the largest size they sold.”

Badgley Mischka Sequin Ruffle Gown

$850
  • Description
  • Pros

Fashion experts once advised fuller-figured ladies to avoid clothes with texture. Fortunately, we now know better. Take ruching, as seen in this Badgley Mishcka plus size gown, for example. It’s definitely a style to look for if minimizing your tummy area is a priority. The gathering of the material has a lovely cascading effect, and the modest slit draws attention to your natural waist and elongates the body. The sequined bodice has a racerback, so you can sport a convertible bra, instead of a strapless. We love this in rich emerald green (shown above), but it’s also available in pink.

Promising review: “The dress had the perfect amount of flair and pizazz. I was comfortable all night and the ruched bottom portion was very forgiving and twirled lovely on the dance floor.”

Adrianna Papell Plus Size Foiled Draped Midi-Dress

If you’re preparing for a summer wedding, you’ll want something cool to wear. This foiled number is a lovely choice for any mother of the bride-to-be. It has some elastane for stretch, and the flowy silhouette will skim your hips. If you look closely, the waist is slightly cinched to create an hourglass shape, and the flouncy sleeves give arms breathing room. I see this midi-dress at an afternoon cocktail party or for an evening wedding outdoors. Whatever the venue, you’ll feel incredible in this stunning print.

Promising review: “This is a beautiful dress. The fabric is rich in color, and has some glamorous sheen without looking cheap…It’s well designed for a flattering fit. It’s a little sexy but still appropriate for an older woman.”

Hutch Gemma Burnout Gown

$41
  • Description
  • Pros

Whether the party leads you to an intimate garden setting or a large banquet hall, this Gemma Burnout Gown will work. Perfect for late summer, fall or winter, it’s cut in a flattering wrap-style. If you’re self conscious about your arms, you’ll love the flowy sleeves. They’re less constraining, and still offer some nice camouflage. The floral print features bits of velvet, adding a touch of warmth and sophistication to the overall look. Simply add some black heels, like these Steve Madden’s, pin your hair up, and you’ll be good to go.

Promising review: “Both times I wore this dress it was to a slightly more ‘formal’ wedding, and I got so many compliments! The colors are gorgeous, and the fabric is amazing — especially the velvet feel in the floral pieces! The dress fits true to size, but can be a little revealing if you are busty like me. However, it can easily be fixed with safety pins!”

Lulus My Whole Heart Long Sleeve Wrap Dress

$79
  • Description
  • Pros

When it doubt, go for a wrap dress. They’re universally flattering, cinching in your waist to create balance between the shoulders and hips. They also comfortable, leaving some breathing room for your tummy. Three things made this one from Lulus make the cut for our best plus size mother of the bride dresses list: For one thing, it looks great on all body types — check out the photos online to see! Next, it has long sheer sleeves with beautiful button detail, which make the entire look more refined and wedding-appropriate. Finally, it’s available in several different colors. Whether the event is for day or evening, you’re bound to find the hue that is right for you. I love this dress worn with the hair down and some added curl. However, it would also look ravishing with your hair in a French Twist — like Audrey Hepburn in Breakfast At Tiffany’s — and maybe a rosy lip and cheek tint to finish it off.

Promising review: “I could tell before I opened it that it was nice and heavy…A substantial fabric, not cheap at all…I bought this for my daughter’s wedding next fall and am not disappointed. It’s a true wrap dress, so it will fit even if I keep losing weight. I’m very, very pleased with how it looks on!”

Alex Evenings Sequin Lace Chiffon Two Piece Dress

$209
  • Description
  • Pros

For a traditional ceremony, you may want something on the modest side. Fortunately, there are still a ton of options. This two-piece dress by Alex Evenings, for example, comes in several different colors, and features a slimming A-line silhouette. The skirt is made of chiffon, so it won’t look stiff in the precession line, and the top is made of lace and sequins for dimension and texture. The sleeves are three-quarters, so you’ll show a little skin, but we think you’ll be fine. The dress has a full back, which means you can wear whatever undergarment you like, and includes a hidden zipper.

Adrianna Papell One Shoulder Beaded Gown

$300
  • Description
  • Pros

For a night to remember, you want an unforgettable dress. Take this One Shoulder Beaded Gown, for example. It’s the epitome of glamorous, which is how you want to feel when the photographer snaps a candid photo of you. The draping of the bodice makes it a top choice for bustier ladies, and having something more form-fitting will minimize the appearance of your hips. Although you may want to double check with your daughter before grabbing this in nude, the blush color is also ravishing and wedding appropriate. This dress needs minimal accessories thanks to its sparkly embroidery — so we suggest skipping a necklace, and going for some drop earrings instead.

Promising review: “The color and beading are beautiful. I like the style of the dress, and it’s actually very flattering [for a] big bust…I’ll be wearing this as my mother of the bride dress for a September wedding.”

  • Description
  • Pros

Even if the wedding isn’t a black tie affair, it’s still okay to be fancy. You are the mother of the bride, after all, and this is a special day for you too. This pretty Plus Size Shift Dress is stretchy, has a high neck, and is one of the best plus size mother of the bride dresses for those who dislike bodycon dresses. It’s dressy but not over the top, and is available in 12 other color options. Each include a different style embroidered jacket, which elevates the overall look of the outfit. Keep it on for the ceremony and pictures, and then take it off to let loose when the party starts. If you’re not crazy about your gams, just add a pair of sheer pantyhose. I like these Manzi stockings, because they have different skin tone options, and go up to a 4X-large. Add some delicate jewelry, like these love knot drop earrings, into the mix, and you’ll be ready to dance into the night.

Promising review: “I loved this dress. It’s extremely flattering and I felt comfortable in it all day and night. It moved well for dancing and sitting, and looked great (not rumpled) from start to finish. The vertical lace detail is stunning, and pulls the eye up instead of wide… I wore pearls with hematite detail and lighter silver shoes, and everything matched perfectly despite the different shades of silver… I received compliments all night. I felt beautiful.”

It has a high back, allowing you to skip the strapless bra for something with better support, and the V-neck highlights your decollate. There’s no shortage of good things to say about this Plus Size Art Deco Beaded Blouson Gown. Long and sparkly, this sophisticated number should be on your radar for black tie or formal events. Its relaxed bodice won’t squeeze your bust, and the V-neck is flattering on everyone. The material has some stretch, so whether you’re a size 14 or 20W, the trumpet silhouette will fall effortlessly over your curves, making you look like a total goddess. Created by Adrianna Papell, the look is available in regular, as well as plus size, and comes in fifteen different sparkly colors. If you’re preparing for a winter wedding, go full glam with a faux fur wrap, and drop earrings. For the other seasons, try a pashmina.

Promising review: “I chose this one in gunmetal for my daughter’s August wedding. I felt very comfortable and pretty. It covers enough, adds just the right amount of sparkle, and will be cool for [the] summer. I bought size 24 and 22, ultimately deciding on the 22… I think I’ll be able to wear a bra to keep [my chest] in check, which will make me feel even more comfortable.”

J Kara Plus Size Caplet Short Cocktail Beaded Dress

  • Description
  • Pros

Whether the venue is outdoors or a garden, you’re sure to shine in this J Kara creation. The sassy Cocktail Beaded Dress is a pullover style, so you don’t have to fiddle with buttons or zippers, and the sheer caplet covers the arms without closing them in. It’s drapey, giving a whimsical quality to the look, and provides some texture. If it’s a daytime wedding, go with a pair of lighter pumps, like these comfortable low heel Clark’s. For an afternoon or evening affair, try something a little sexier. I’m a fan of these black patent leather heels from Nine West. They’re under three inches, and have a cute ankle strap.

Promising review: “I love this dress. It was the twelfth one I [tried] and it was the winner. I felt beautiful in it. It was very comfortable, and had just enough bling to feel glamorous…The color was gorgeous, and the price was very reasonable. I highly recommend!”

R&M Richards Plus Size Duster Social Set

$76
  • Description
  • Pros

I love a pantsuit, and if you feel the same, this one from R&M Richards is for you. The pants have an elastic waistband, so if you haven’t had time to lose those last fifteen pounds, it won’t matter. The lace jacket has a sprinkling of sequins, which shimmer in the light. And since it’s a duster, it falls to mid-knee, offering coverage to your bum and thighs. The scoop neck top matches, so you’ll still look elegant if you need to take the jacket off. I would pair this with pearl earrings and necklace. However, this would also look gorgeous with diamond studs, or something more understated.

Promising review: “I wasn’t actually the belle of the ball, but I really felt like I was. I wore this to my son’s wedding. It was comfy all the way through to the end of the reception.”

Ever Pretty Embroidery Mermaid Dress

$73
  • Description
  • Pros

This Embroidery Mermaid Dress has a semi-vintage quality to it, and hugs your curves in all the right ways. The sheer overlay covers the sweetheart neckline of the bodice, giving the illusion of a high neck, and the sparkly detail means you can keep jewelry to a minimum. If you fancy extra volume in the skirt, add a petticoat, and don’t be to take a few inches from the bottom if you’re under five-foot-four. Although we love this look with its short sleeves, Ever-Pretty has a sleeveless version, which also comes in nine different colors. To find your perfect dress size, happy customers on Amazon suggest using the maker’s sizing chart, which is included in the product photos.

Promising review: “Buy this dress! I am five-foot-five, curvy, and bought this in size 20. [I recommend] measuring yourself and comparing against the seller measurements as sizing runs very small. I’m usually a 14 or 16, but the size 20 fits me just right. It’s not too tight, not too big, and I don’t need to wear shapewear underneath. I also have a little bit of a tummy and this dress makes me look so streamlined and slender with curves in all the right places. I also bought a trumpet petticoat to make sure the skirt poofs out for that hourglass shape.”

Adrianna Papell Metalic Knit Jumpsuit

$143
  • Description
  • Pros

If you’re planning to party like it’s 1999, we suggest this metallic jumpsuit from Adrianna Papell. It’s a bit edgier than traditional mother of the bride outfits, but if you and your daughter have always “been more like buds,” you may want something to complement your youthful spirit. The jumpsuit features a blouson bodice that’s slouchy in that really flattering way, and works for most body types. It will provide coverage without hiding your figure, making it a nice choice if you want to keep things modest while being a tad sexy. The irredentist drape sleeves are another bonus, especially if you’re not big on exposing your arms. Although it does run long, it may be worth taking to your tailor, especially since you’ll be able to wear this to other events. I would pair this look with matching metallic low wedge heels, and this sweet sparkly purse.

With a full skirt and satin bodice, this dress from Couture Candy looks like it’s fresh off the red carpet. It has a deep V-neck with a sheer overlay, and laces in the back resembling a corset. The straps are thick for support, and if you’re fearful of flashing too much cleavage, a lace bandeau cover can be worn beneath. The skirt has enough volume to minimize your hips, includes pockets, and its lovely floral print is a lot more exciting than a solid color. Don’t forget a shrug, in case things get nippy, and your favorite pair of drop earrings. Whether the invite calls for formal or black tie, you’ll be ready in style.

Mac Duggal Fabulouss Long Sleeve Glitter A-Line Gown

$306
  • Description
  • Pros

If you’re more of a minimalist, you may be uncomfortable with lots of frills and lace. If you still want to take your look up a notch, however, this long sleeve A-line gown may be a happy medium. It’s in one solid color, but the fabric is glittered to add some sparkle. A thin black belt divides the bodice from the skirt and highlights the smallest part of your waist. The back has a sweeping train, but nothing so long that it will rival your daughter’s, and the sleeves fold gently at the cuffs to soften the entire look. This dress reminds me slightly of old Hollywood, and if you’re feeling adventurous or like vintage, you can try copying one of the hairdos of these old Hollywood fashion icons. But even if you prefer an updo — I love a high bun myself — you’ll still dazzle as the matriarch of your family.

Alex Evenings Sequin Mock Two Piece Dress with Jacket

$239
  • Description
  • Pros

For something that will look timeless in photos, but still feels special enough for your daughter’s big day, consider this two-piece Alex Evenings design. Its chiffon skirt has a godet-flair, and the sequined high neck top gently skims the bust and torso. We love the matching jacket, especially for ceremonies where it’s inappropriate to show skin. Although it’s only available in this navy hue, it can still be worn for a summer event, as well as winter. To brighten it up, add some silver strappy heels, a silver clutch, and a pearl necklace. Alex Evenings is known for his plus size flattering designs, so you can expect for this to accentuate your attributes in all the ways you want. However, if many happy customers on Nordstrom recommend sizing down for a more form-fitted look. And remember, if you ordered it a month or so away from the event, you’ll have time to get it tailored, as this one customer did.

Promising review: “I was very pleased with the dress. It fits perfectly. I did have it shortened, because I’m short and it fit me as a long dress [instead of tea-length]. I’m wearing it to my daughter’s wedding. Now I just need I find comfortable shoes!”

Badgley Mischka Sequin Skirt Gown

$105
  • Description
  • Pros

– Buy from Rent The Runway for $801

If you’re not the dress type, but want to be fancy, this is the option to know. Make no mistake, the Sequin Skirt Gown is still a dress, but its pattern blocking makes it look otherwise. It’s also a lot more comfortable, thanks to its tee-shirt inspired top. I should note that several happy customers have commented on it being low cut on busty ladies, so if that sounds like you, a plus size cleavage coverup should help. This shimmery dress would look wonderful at a fall or winter wedding, and even other special evens. The skirt includes pockets — always a nice feature — and comes up high enough to show off your shoes.

Promising review: “This dress was gorgeous, and I felt very fancy in it! I loved the cut of the skirt and the colors were enough to be fun but not so much to look clownish. I was also worried it would look too holiday-ish, but it didn’t. I felt like a stood out in a room full of beautiful gowns. But beware — [your chest] will definitely be displayed in this dress. If you are modest, you will need a cami or black bra underneath.”

Dylan & Davids Long Sleeve Hand Beaded Mother of The Bride Dress

$160
  • Description
  • Pros

If you want to be covered, but still enjoy a little glitz, you’ll like this long sleeve dress. It has a sheer overlay with delicate beading throughout the sleeves and bodice to give the touch of glamour you’re looking for. Its scoop neck falls just below the collarbone, so there’s no worry about flashing your cleavage to your clergymen. Although the back is a tad low, it’s far from scandalous, and it’s nice to show the world that mamas still have it! The flowy skirt will be fun to move around the room in, and the dress comes in several different colors. Since it already has some sparkle, skip the statement necklace, and go for something dainty. I like this Swarovski solitaire crystal one, which is under $100, and can be worn long after the wedding is over.

ML Monique Lhuillier Pink Multi Floral Dress

Rent The Runway, starting at $41 – Rent for 4 days or buy for Rent The Runway for $92.43!

You can never go wrong with a bright print for a spring or summer wedding, and I’m suggesting this one by Monique Lhuillier. Yes, it’s sleeveless, but can be paired with a shrug, shawl, or cardigan, and it will keep you cool from the ceremony to the party. I’ve actually rented this designer piece, and can attest to how pretty it makes one feel. The material is surprisingly thick, but that’s a sign of its quality, and you really don’t want to be wearing something flimsy enough to blow upward if it becomes breezy. The dress includes pockets, and the back’s zipper is hidden, making the entire dress appear seamless. Some reviewers suggest sizing down when ordering. Don’t forget to check out the customer photos to see how other ladies with similar measurements look, and if it every size is rented, heart the look to be notified when it’s back in stock.

Promising review: “First of all, I was shocked when I ordered the 22W and it was too big — that doesn’t happen to me often…It’s kind of heavy for a sleeveless summer dress, but the weight of the fabric (and the full lining) worked for me, because I’m curvy and the volume and weight both held things in and camouflaged to an extent some of my more extreme curves. I wore the dress with a cardigan and shoes, and I got a ton of compliments on it.”

City Chic Paneled Bodice Maxi Dress

$60
  • Description
  • Pros

I like to think of a maxi dress as a hybrid between a bodycon and shift. It’s loose, but not baggy, and can showcase your form without putting it on full display. This Paneled Bodice Maxi is a perfect example, highlighting the shape of your bust, while still leaving something to the imagination. The opposite of matronly, this dress is youthful without being young, offers some movement and support. The top has panels and lace for a modern touch, and the center of the skirt has a bit of slimming ruching. If you don’t want to go sleeveless, trying pairing with a boyfriend blazer or a chiffon cropped shrug.

Promising review: “I love this dress, and will be wearing it to a wedding soon. It looks so gorgeous on!”

3/4-Sleeve Sweetheart-Neck Romantic Lace Midi Dress

$68
  • Description
  • Pros

We like a dress that can be worn multiple times like this one from Lane Bryant. The sweetheart neckline is alluring but modest, and the perfect way to expose the décolletage. The thin belt emphasizes the waist, and the skirt is long enough that you won’t need to constantly adjust as you dance. Our favorite part, however, is the lace top. The long sleeves are great, especially if you’re self conscious about your biceps, and makes the garment a bit fancier.

Ever Pretty Plus Size Lace Chiffon Formal Evening Dress

$67
  • Description
  • Pros

If you didn’t get to wear something billowy for your own wedding, this is your chance. The Ever Pretty Plus Size Lace Chiffon Formal offers an empire waistline, and an elegant floor skimming skirt. A wonderful pick for those on a budget, we think you’ll also love how comfortable the gown is. The long caped sleeves make hugging relatives rip proof, and the overall shape is great for those with fuller hips. Available in a variety of color options, you’re sure to find one perfect for your daughter’s venue.

Promising review: I’m five-foot-three, a size 22, and this [fit nicely]. I love the color and style. The cape sleeves are so pretty and are comfortable on my larger arms. It fits well on top, and the skirt hangs softly away from body…I did have to hem it, since it was a few inches too long.”

Lulus Lost in the Moment Maxi Dress

$79
  • Description
  • Pros

If you’re lucky enough to go to a tropical destination wedding, you’ll want something beach-proof. This Lost In The Moment Maxi Dress is just what the designer ordered! It’s whimsical, light, and won’t cling to your stomach. It features an elongating empire waist, and has sheer short sleeves with ruffled detail. If you’re uncomfortable with the slit or it nixes your plans to wear pantyhose, opt for slimming short shapewear that will smooth your middle, while leaving your legs bare. If you have varicose veins, conceal them with DermaBlend body makeup. It has a SPF of 24, and offers decent coverage. You can also apply a self-tanner or with sheer stockings. This maxi would look great with a shawl, and is available in slate blue, blush, sage, and burgundy. Scroll through the review section on Lulus to see photos of how other ladies of your body type are rocking the look.

Promising review: “This dress fits so perfectly. It drapes just right and accentuates all the right places. I’m so happy I decided to purchase it! It’s comfy, has some flexibility due to the elastic waistband and the color is stunning!”

Badgley Mischka Blush Sequin Off Shoulder Gown

$85
  • Description
  • Pros

– Buy from Rent The Runway for $195

Although this may not be everyone’s cup of Joe, I highly recommend this glitzy Badgley Mischka. It’s one of the best plus size mother of the bride dresses, and if you don’t believe me, look at the reviewers photos. Its sweetheart neckline gives just a hint of cleavage, and while the cap sleeves don’t offer a lot of coverage, they pull eyes upwards, drawing attention away from the hips. We recommend that you size up, but expect you’ll still feel like a complete star as soon as you slip this on. Check out what this happy customer who’s a 20W had to say.

Promising review: “The quality of the dress was top notch. I wore the regular length with flat shoes, which was perfect. If you’re wearing any type of heel, you’ll want the long. I wore a strapless bra under and Spanx high waist shorts. The bra was probably not needed since the dress boning and shape held everything together well. I wore to an indoor wedding at the end of summer in [the south] and was never hot.”

Adrianna Papell Plus Size Floral Chiffon Tiered Dress

$43
  • Description
  • Pros

For the MOB (mother of the bride) who never was big on getting dolled up, this easy Floral Chiffon Tiered Dress may be the one. The A-line has a pleated skirt that skims the torso, and includes a drawstring waist. The sheer sleeves let you skip a jacket, and are still light enough for the hot summer months. The V-neck highlights your decollate, and would look smashing with a gold necklace. Pair with your best matching gold ankle strapped sandals, and you’ll be ready to give your baby girl away.

Promising review: This dress is absolutely beautiful and so well made. It is much nicer once you see it in person. I got it for my daughter’s wedding in June. I think it’s flattering on any figure type.”

Badgley Mischka Red Cold Shoulder Gown

$93
  • Description
  • Pros

This plus size Badgley Mischka dress may have a chilly name, but its red jewel tone will warm your skin and make you stand out in pictures. The off the shoulder sleeves drape to cover the fleshiest part of the arm, while leaving your gorgeous shoulders exposed. The ruching is concentrated at the chiffon skirt’s center, leading upward to highlight your bust instead of middle. If that’s too risque for your liking, try adding a shawl into the mix. The back is on the lower end, so we recommend trying backless shapewear, instead of a regular bra. This way you won’t have to fiddle with straps all night or worry if anything is showing. The gown is easy to slip into with its hidden zipper, and just hovers above the floor. Although we think it would be perfect for a formal summer wedding, it would also work for spring or fall.

Promising review: “This was super flattering and very comfortable. It was great for a summer wedding. The bra situation was a little tricky, because even with my best strapless, you could still see it in the back. I got creative with an adhesive bra and some masking tape. I was so in love with this dress and was determined to make this work.”
