Discover what makes these expanded Dollar General stores different from the original locations
Love Dollar General deals but wish you could do your full grocery shopping there? You’re in luck! Dollar General Market (DG Market) stores offer everything from fresh meat to celebration cakes—all with the same budget-friendly prices you already love. The lesser-known chain has been around for more than 20 years, but new locations are continuing to pop up. The store offers budget-conscious shoppers and those with limited retail options a place to grab their groceries without making several trips. Wondering what’s available at these locations? Keep reading to learn more about Dollar General Market stores and what you can expect when you shop at one.
What is Dollar General Market?
Dollar General has always sold pantry staples, snacks and drinks, but Dollar General Market offers far more than the small grocery selection currently available. These stores often pop up in rural areas where supermarket options are limited.
That’s the case in Huntington Township, Pennsylvania, where the recent grand opening of a Dollar General Market will make things easier for residents. A CitizensVoice.com article reveals that after the town’s only supermarket closed three years ago, people have had to rely on Instacart food deliveries for their groceries. That will change with the arrival of the DG Market location.
Though it may not be as well known as its grocery competitors, Dollar General Market has seen continued expansion since the first location opened in 2003. As of November 2024, there were reportedly 600 locations around the country offering the expanded grocery items. More stores continue to open (like this one in Chillicothe, Tennessee), suggesting they could eventually become as common as the original Dollar General stores. Since the website doesn’t include a store locator, the best way to find a location near you is to Google it.
How does Dollar General Market compare to the original?

Though DG Markets are still under the Dollar General brand, they differ from the traditional locations in several ways.
The first is the store size—DG Markets are usually around 16,000 square feet, while Dollar General is typically 9,000 square feet. This makes sense as the space is needed to accommodate the groceries and additional freezers.
DG Markets also have a much more expansive product selection. Traditional Dollar General stores focus primarily on general merchandise, immediate needs and seasonal shopping.
The markets, on the other hand, are designed for one-stop shopping by providing a full grocery section that includes produce, fresh meat, dairy and frozen foods. There are also more beauty and health products in stock than you would find at a traditional Dollar General.
What does Dollar General Market sell?
Since there is no dedicated website for Dollar General Markets, visiting a store in person is the best way to explore everything they offer. Lucky for you, shoppers have posted YouTube walk-throughs showcasing what’s in stock!
Here are some of the highlights of the DG Market stores:
Party-ready desserts

Baked goods can be particularly expensive, especially when fresh! In this YouTube video, you can see that this particular location sells cheesecake slices for $5.95, one-layer cakes (like red velvet) for $7.95 and a celebration cake for $16.95. It’s a great option for a special occasion without breaking the bank!
Coffee favorites

The markets appear to have a large selection of coffee products, and some great deals too. The Dollar General brand “Clover Valley” is available to buy, but there are plenty of name brands—like McCafe, Dunkin’ and Maxwell House—on the shelves too. At the time, there was even a two for $10 deal for Folgers coffee.
Affordable fresh produce

A stand for produce can be seen in this video, showcasing a variety of bagged onions and potatoes selling for $3.50 each—a great deal if you need to use a lot of them for a particular recipe.
Fresh meats

Meats are another DG Market staple, and shoppers can choose from sausages, pork chops, seasoned steaks and more. However, the majority of prices appear to be on par with what you’ll find at other grocery stores. You will find there are still some more affordable options in this section, such as $5 Tyson Savory Campfire Boneless Pork Chops.
Convenient bagged produce

When you shop at a DG Market, you’ll also come across a section dedicated to bagged and refrigerated produce. For fast lunches, there are salad kits, but you can also buy shredded lettuce, carrot sticks and mushrooms for snacks and recipes. While the salad kits are on the pricey side, individual vegetables and fruits (such as the $1.95 baby carrots) won’t put a dent in your wallet.
Whether you grab ingredients for your dinner or stock up on household cleaning supplies, the wide variety of a Dollar General Market makes it easier to buy everything you need in one trip!
