Shoppers Say Aldi’s New Giant Bag Beats IKEA’s Iconic Blue Tote — and It’s Free! How to Get One
Aldi is giving away a free oversized grocery bag — here’s how to snag one before they’re gone.
Aldi, the German-founded discount grocery chain, is always looking for new ways to entice customers. Though this is usually done with unique seasonal finds and new product roll-outs, the company is trying a different approach this week. Aldi is catering to those who love to stock up on their affordable goods by offering a giveaway for a super-sized reusable grocery bag. Keep reading to learn more about the free Aldi bags, how to get one and what loyal shoppers think of the promotion.
Why Aldi is giving away free big bags
While many grocery stores allow you to take plastic and/or paper bags when you make a purchase, Aldi stores don’t. The chain charges a small fee for every bag you use for your groceries. (In early 2023, the company moved exclusively to paper bags to help cut down on waste.)
The reason? By skipping free bags, Aldi can keep prices low for customers. If shoppers were able to use unlimited bags for their merchandise, the company would have to raise the prices of groceries to still make a profit.
Instead, customers are encouraged to bring their own reusable bags or boxes to carry their groceries back to their vehicle once they leave the store. If shoppers don’t have their own bags, Aldi does sell some that can be purchased and re-used for future shopping trips.
For one day this week, however, Aldi fans will have a chance to snag a special reusable bag that will come in handy for even the largest of hauls.
What makes the Aldi big bag so special?

To entice shoppers, the company is giving away a new “Aldi Big Bag” on Tuesday, September 16, that is designed to fit more inside than traditional reusable bags. These over-sized bags are necessary, according to the grocery chain, “because bigger savings mean bigger hauls, and bigger hauls mean you need a bigger bag.”
The promotional photo for the giveaway bag shows that it’s more than double the size of the normal bags you can buy from the store. The website says it’s 16 inches deep, 36 inches long and 22 inches wide, which Aldi proudly boasts is bigger than a carry-on suitcase.
How to get your free Aldi bag
Want to get your hands on one of the free Aldi bags? You’ll have to act fast—the company is only giving away 1,000 of them.
The good news, however, is you don’t have to head to the store to snag one. They will only be available online at AldiBigBag.com starting at 9:00 a.m. CT on Tuesday, September 16.
They’ll be available on a first come, first-served basis while supplies last. If you’re worried you may forget to hop online at that time, you can sign up for the waitlist (Just click on the “Notify me when available” button). Then you’ll get a notification when it’s time to try and claim one!
Shopper reactions: Is the Aldi big bag a hit or a miss?
Loyal Aldi fans shared their thoughts on Reddit about the limited giveaway. The responses seemed to be mixed, with some excited about the size of the special bags.
“Aldi Big Bag is even bigger than the excellent Harbor Freight (and thus IKEA) bag! Just checked,” commented one user, nodding to the iconic giant blue bag IKEA claims is “one of the most used bags in the world.”
Others find the large size to be impractical for the average customer, leaving them wondering how they’d even be able to use it.
“Seems way too big when shopping small,” said another Reddit commenter. “And then during big trips do I really want a giant bag that when full is probably pretty heavy? I could see having one to load with stuff we need kept near in our van during our road trips. But I think I’ll pass.”
For some shoppers, the announcement of the bag has them pining for a different style of Aldi grocery bag that is no longer available.
“I so want another oblong insulated zippered bag,” one person said. “It usually holds all or most of my frozen and cold items from [a] twice a month shopping trip.”
