Key Takeaways

  • JCPenney's off-price retail campaign calls out bad shopping habits done at off-price stores.
  • In their new commercial, JCPenney highlights their quality and deals.
  • Between August 28 and August 30, JCPenney is rewarding your retail regrets. Details below.

JCPenney was once a one-stop shop for everything from clothes that satisfy the entire family to housewares that last years—but other retailers have ramped up the competition. These days, stores quickly hop on trends with cheaply made goods that might fit the current styles and aesthetics but ultimately don’t stand the test of time—and JCPenney is doing its part in combatting this.

In an ad put out by JCPenney, folks were introduced to their new Retail Rejuvenation campaign, and in the clip, six regretful shoppers attend a satirical Retail Rejuvenation Retreat in an effort to heal from “good deals” they snagged at other off-price retailers that left them wanting more.

“These people are victims to the things that they find at those other stores,” says the host of the retreat. “I, too, was trapped in off-price shopping habits. The last pair of sandals that I purchased from one of those other stores—I found them inside of a pot,” she hilariously shared.

Later in the ad, she leads the participants in a series of laugh-out-loud mantras meant to break bad shopping habits including, “No, I will not be able to get that stain out at home,” and “I am worth more than the bra I found at the cookware section.”

In tandem with this campaign, JCPenney is offering shoppers the opportunity to right their wrongs between August 28 and August 30. Visiting your local JCPenney, trade in one of your recent retail regrets in exchange for $15 off a $50 purchase. Traded goods will then be donated to Good360.

“There’s often this sense [among shoppers] that if you’re going to get a deal, there’s some tradeoffs involved,” said Marisa Thalberg, chief customer and marketing officer of JCPenney’s parent company, Catalyst Brands, as reported by AdWeek. “We’re pushing up in a playful way against the idea that there are lots of other bigger retailers that seemingly satisfy you with this thrill of great deals, but it’s not always as true as it seems.”

While JCPenney’s new campaign has people talking, take a look at a few of our favorite affordable finds that rival other retailers.
