Did you literally get burned by a sunscreen fail this summer? It happens to the best of us — but the good news is, there are ways to keep it from ever happening again. And remember, summer isn’t the only time you need to worry about the sun! Keep your skin protected all year long with these easy tips (along with some of our favorite products).

Stick with SPF 50.

It may seem like SPF 100 gives double the protection, but it only blocks one percent more UVB rays than SPF 50. Experts say this leads to a false sense of security that can cause you to stay out longer, resulting in as much skin damage as an unprotected sunbather.

Go for lotions over sprays.

While sprays are a mess-free way to apply sunscreen, the light mist doesn’t cover skin as uniformly as lotions do, increasing the likelihood of sunburns. What’s more, inhaling the ingredients from aerosols can trigger lung irritation or asthma for some.

Choose broad-spectrum protection.

Sunscreens labeled “broad-spectrum ” offer protection superior to those that aren’t. They shield skin from UVB rays (which cause burns, wrinkles and long-term skin damage) and UVA rays (which have been linked to skin cancer) to keep you sun-safe.
