What is the Grump Tree?
Trader Joe’s first launched the Grump Tree in 2019 and it quickly became a hit in the stores, returning in 2020 and every year since. The tree resembles the iconic image of the Grinch’s hand holding an ornament, but it’s actually just the plant.
The Grump Tree is a Lemon Cypress tree that offers a pleasant lemon scent. The tree sold at Trader Joe’s is placed in a red sack and tied with green string, while the actual plant is wrapped in ribbon with an ornament hung on the end to make it look slumped. These intentional details create the Grinch image.
“Trader Joe’s Grump Tree is straight out of a whimsical land,” reads the Trader Joe’s description of the tree. “They make a quirky centerpiece for your holiday table decorations and are the perfect white elephant gift for a co-worker who’s more bah-humbug than fa-la-la-la-la.”
