Telehealth provider Amwell offers an unusually complete range of virtual healthcare services, including prescription weight management, breastfeeding, behavioral counseling, and more. Amwell can accept but doesn’t require insurance in many case and can connect you with both local pharmacies and providers if you need in-person services. We interviewed senior management, combed through the site, and made a mystery shopper call to customer service to get a thorough idea of both the telehealth provider’s offerings, and what the experience for patients is like.

“Amwell started in 2006, one year before the first iPhone,” Meredith Dixon, APRN, FNP-BC, Amwell Senior Vice President & General Manager of Clinical Services tells Woman’s World. “Brothers Ido and Roy Schoenberg, both doctors, founded the company with the vision of making healthcare more accessible to patients and more manageable for doctors to provide care.”

Amwell's telehealth program is expansive

Amwell offers online counseling for a wide range of healthcare needs. Patients can make appointments online at any time, from anywhere in the U.S. If an existing patient doesn’t already have a scheduled appointment, they can simply log in to their account and see if any providers are available at that moment in time to speak with them. Amwell also accepts insurance is also accepted but isn’t necessary, so those without healthcare coverage can access medical attention, too.

“Just like using a device to shop, bank or access a rideshare app, Amwell Medical Group (AMG) connects patients to digital healthcare,” Dixon adds. “Insurance may be used but it isn’t required for a telehealth visit.”

Amwell’s telehealth services include:

  • Birth control
  • Breastfeeding support
  • Cognitive behavioral therapy
  • Chronic care management
  • Couples therapy
  • Dialectical behavior therapy
  • Grief counseling
  • Life transitions
  • LGBTQ counseling
  • Nutrition counseling
  • Weight management
  • Online pediatrics
  • Online psychiatry
  • Stress management
  • Online therapy
  • Online urgent care
  • Women’s health

The Amwell signup process should be easy

Signing up is quick and completely virtual, and once you receive the care you’re looking for, you’ll be able to access ongoing support from an online care team. You’ll start out by either making an account on Amwell’s website, or if you’d prefer, by calling it’s toll-free 844-733-3627 phone number. This will allow you to connect with board-certified doctors in your area. If applicable, you have the option of using insurance and moving forward, you’ll be able to reconnect with your doctor for follow-ups, questions, and more. Patient information is kept secure, but patients can opt to have their results shared with their general practitioners and other members of an existing medical team.

It’s a “hybrid” telehealth process

Unlike other telehealth providers, Amwell considers its process to be a “hybrid” one. Appointments with Amwell’s providers will take place over the phone or via a video call. When prescribing for certain health conditions, however, Amwell’s doctors may want to connect with the patient’s in-person general practitioner. Then, if tests indicate a prescription could be useful, Amwell’s provider can write one. It’s collaborative, and makes sure your in-person GPs are up-to-date on any and all treatments.

“We specifically train our clinicians on how to provide virtual care,” Dixon tells us. “Most importantly, though, our patients say we’re different because our medical team is available, caring and communicates in a timely way.”

Customer care is always available

While Amwell prides itself on its wide range of treatments, the company also greatly values its customer care. Patients can reach out to doctors at any time of day, even without an appointment. All they need to do is login to their account, and available providers will be able to answer any questions the patient might have. If it’s more of an administrative question, however, Amwell support can be reached via e‑mail or by phone.

“Patients can expect a clear plan for follow-up after their first AMG telehealth visit,” says Dixon. “Our care coordinators offer ongoing support, answer questions, help with referrals and more.”

The customer service phone line is accessible

We called Amwell’s customer service line to determine what the care is actually like. We asked a number of important questions regarding available weight loss treatments, cost, insurance, and what there is to know about the nutrition program. We were connected to someone within 15 seconds, and the representative we spoke to was knowledgeable and helpful regarding a wide range of topics.

Amwell has a range of nutrition counseling offerings

Amwell offers nutrition counselling for a dozen different needs, including lifestyle, dietary preference, weight loss, and medical conditions. This may be paired with testing and/or prescription medication, where needed.

  • Weight loss
  • Digestive disorders
  • Food allergies
  • Gluten free diets
  • Pregnancy diets
  • Pediatric nutrition
  • High cholesterol
  • Sports nutrition
  • Vegetarian diets
  • Vitamins and supplements
  • High blood pressure
  • Meal planning

How Amwell’s nutrition program works

Amwell’s nutrition counselors are also registered dietitians and can only be reached by appointment, which can be made in the app or over the phone. After being matched their provider, patients will share their goals and aspirations, and eventually, the nutritionist will be able to make a personalized meal plan. Unlike many of the other telehealth providers we’ve looked at, Amwell is not as focused on prescribing GLP-1s. However, the weight management program does note that certain medications have been approved for weight loss, which could mean an Amwell RD would prescribe something like Ozempic or a compounded semaglutide, if applicable.

“Our team of doctors keeps up with the latest medical treatments and guidelines and, at the right time, incorporates them into patient care,” Dixon says. “Technology and treatment may evolve, but our commitment to patient care and safety is unchanged.”

Insurance is optional, for parts of it

For Amwell’s urgent care counseling, patients can use health insurance. Amwell offers a wide range of treatments for many health conditions

If you need immediate access to counselling or treatment for medical conditions without a waiting room, you may want to consider Amwell. From nutrition counseling to acne and urgent care, the company has a number of specialists that are able to connect with new patients at any time. However, its nutrition program is less focused on prescribing weight loss drugs like GLP-1s, and more focused on exercise and meal plans. So that may come into play when patients — particularly those looking to lose weight — are selecting a telehealth provider.
