Sesame Care is a telehealth provider available in all 50 U.S. states. Patients are connected to doctors who can provide treatments for a wide range of conditions, including weight loss, sexual health, mental health, and more. It does not accept insurance but because it maintains a fully online business model, Sesame can offer prescriptions at a fixed, low cost.

The new Success By Sesame program gives patients access to GLP-1 prescriptions, along with other means of weight loss assistance. “One thing we noticed last year was the number of patients who were speaking to their clinicians on Sesame and saying, ‘I really want to try these weight loss medications.’ So we built out an offering,” he explains. “We hired a board certified obesity medicine physician to oversee the program, and nationwide clinicians who are trained and appropriately able to prescribe medically assisted weight loss therapy.”

While GLP-1 medications like semaglutide and tirzepatide are a valuable tool for weight loss, additional education is crucial. That’s why the program provides patients with educational tools, and possible coaching, to augment their experience: “The program includes a library of nutrition and weight loss content that’s available to all patients,” Botta says. “And depending on the patient’s needs, we will refer them out to a nutritionist that accepts their insurance so they can get ongoing nutrition care and guidance from a licensed nutritionist in their area.”

After you fill out a survey and meet with a provider, doctors may write prescriptions as needed. Then the patient can communicate with their provider of choice 24/7 with any questions or concerns. Through the online portal, patients can make follow-up appointments, have their prescriptions adjusted, and more — all virtually. Everything is paid for online and upfront, and although the company does not take insurance, everything is offered at a low, fixed cost—$249 a month for prescription weight loss medications.

“You can look at the full roster of clinicians on Sesame, and choose you think is the best fit for you,” Botta explains. “This is generally based on their location, their availability, skill set and experience.”

With Success by Sesame, patients can use unlimited messaging with their chosen provider. Additionally, they can make follow up visits as needed to monitor success and — if necessary — to adjust treatment. And the team of doctors includes licensed professionals, including specialists.

“Patients can reach out to their provider directly via the assessment platform on the app or website,” Botta adds. “They can also reach out to our customer service team at any time if they have concerns around billing or product availability or just want to confirm shipping. And everybody has access to their clinician for messaging regarding dosage, administering a medication or side effects.”

We found the customer service phone line unreliable

We called Sesame’s customer service line in November 2024 to investigate the company’s support. We were left on hold for five minutes before the call was dropped. We reached out again in December, and after about five minutes on hold, we were connected with someone. The agent was able to answer various questions regarding weight loss offerings, insurance, and additional benefits. Even though reaching out to your provider through the online portal may be easy, but connecting with customer service isn’t as convenient.

Sesame wants the user experience to be as easy as possible, and patients can cancel and reschedule appointments up to only three hours in advance via the online portal. Memberships can also be canceled at any time.

Prescriptions may be sent by mail, or picked up locally

The delivery process for Sesame Care is virtually painless. Patients can opt to have their prescriptions delivered to their home, or to a local pharmacy. If the patient opts to have their prescription sent to their home, it generally takes two to three business days. However, choosing a local pharmacy allows for same-day pickup.

Even though patients may have insurance, it doesn’t matter, because the company doesn’t accept it. However, certain treatments, such as the weight loss program, can be paid for with a Health Savings Account (HSA) or Flexible Spending Account (FSA). Insurance may also cover your weight loss prescription (if you’re opting into one that costs extra from the membership), and Sesame providers can assist with prior authorization requests.

“One of the things we realized is that American health insurance has become a lot less generous,” said Michel Botta. “So making sure that regardless of your insurance plan, you can get access to this program and that’s affordable, was a priority for us.”

Success by Sesame offers a complete weight loss plan for $249 per month, which includes telehealth visits, follow-ups, lab tests, unlimited messaging, and the cost of a compounded semaglutide prescription delivered to your home. Telehealth services without the plan are $89 per month, and you can pay for almost all brand-names GLP-1 like Ozempic, Mounjaro, or Victoza separately through the pharmacy of your choice.
