What if we told you there was a delicious and refreshing drink that could help you lose weight the easy way? That’s what TikTok users are promising with the viral honeydew agua fresca drink. Users claim it can rev your metabolism and reduce bloating, making it easier for the pounds to fall off. But does it really work? We spoke to an expert about whether the drink is just tasty or the weight-loss solution some claim it to be.

What is honeydew agua fresca?

On TikTok, honeydew agua fresca goes by different names, such as honeydew water, the honeydew hydrator and even the honeydew crisper. Regardless of what name you’ve seen, the basic ingredients remain the same. Honeydew agua fresca is made with fresh honeydew melon, fresh lime juice, cold water, ice and some type of sweetener such as simple syrup or sugar.

Can honeydew agua fresca aid weight loss?

Amy Shapiro MS, RD, CDN, ButcherBox lead nutritionist says “It can for sure, but with a few tweaks.” Let’s take a look at how each ingredient in this drink could support—or derail—your weight-loss goals:

Honeydew melon reduces bloating

“This fruit is over 90 percent water, making it naturally hydrating and low in calories,” says Shapiro. “It contains fiber, vitamin C and potassium, which can help reduce bloating, support metabolism and manage cravings. The high water content also helps with satiety, so you may eat less later in the day.” (See more foods that reduce bloating here.)

Lime juice boosts satiety

“Limes add flavor without adding calories,” says Shapiro. “The acidity can help slow stomach emptying, possibly keeping you fuller longer. It’s also rich in antioxidants like vitamin C, which supports healthy immune and skin function.”

Water revs your metabolism

“A glass of water and ice are calorie-free and contribute to hydration,” says Shapiro. “Staying hydrated is often overlooked when it comes to weight loss, but it can curb hunger and improve metabolism.”

Simple syrup spikes blood sugar

“This is where the drink can become more of a treat than a health tonic,” says Shapiro. “Adding sugar [or simple syrup] can quickly raise blood sugar levels and increase overall calorie intake, which may work against [your] weight loss goal.”

3 ways to make honeydew agua fresca healthier

It’s a no-brainer that the one ingredient in this drink that can quickly derail your weight-loss goals is the simple syrup or sugar. But even if you’re on a weight-loss journey, that doesn’t mean your cravings for a bit of sweetness will disappear. Shapiro has several recommendations to help you indulge in a honeydew agua fresca without spiking your blood sugar or derailing your goals:

  • Try “Stevia or monk fruit, since a small amount of these plant-based, no-calorie sweeteners don’t affect blood sugar and blend well into cold drinks,” says Shapiro.
  • Try “raw honey or pure maple syrup (in moderation), since these offer trace antioxidants and minerals,” says Shapiro.
  • Skip “added sweeteners and add fresh mint or cucumber for extra flavor instead,” says Shapiro.

To maximize the potential weight-loss benefits, “I would recommend enjoying this drink either in the morning before or after coffee to help with hydration or early afternoon before a meal to curb appetite slightly,” says Shapiro. “A serving of 8 to 12 ounces is ideal to keep calories in check and to support hydration without overdoing sugar or fruit intake.”

More benefits of honeydew agua fresca ingredients

If weight loss isn’t your goal and you’re wondering if there are any other health benefits to this tasty drink, we have good news.

  • Honeydew melon: The fruit is “rich in potassium, which supports heart health and may help manage blood pressure,” says Shapiro. “It also provides vitamin C for immune health and hydration for skin and joint health.”
  • Lime juice: “High in vitamin C and flavonoids, lime juice may reduce inflammation and support collagen production,” says Shapiro. “The tartness may also stimulate digestive enzymes.”
  • Water and ice: “Proper hydration helps with energy, digestion, brain function and even mood regulation,” says Shapiro.

Ultimately, while few things are a one-stop shop for weight loss, this fruit-forward drink can be a smarter choice than sugary iced teas or store-bought lemonades, especially when made with fresh ingredients and low-glycemic sweeteners.
