Tiktok’s Cortisol Cocktail Recipes Promise Weight Loss—but Does the Drink Actually Work?
Plus see the early warning signs that you might have high cortisol
From skin to sleep, stress impacts every part of our health—including our ability to lose weight. So it’s no wonder that your TikTok page is full of cortisol cocktail recipes designed to help bring your stress levels down and finally help you shed unwanted pounds. But do these elixirs actually work? We turned to the experts to find out.
High cortisol levels can make weight loss difficult
Cortisol is a steroid hormone produced by the adrenal glands, often referred to as the body’s stress hormone. The hormone plays a large role in regulating metabolism, inflammation, blood sugar levels and the sleep-wake cycle. It’s essential for survival, too, and short-term spikes help us respond to danger with the “flight or fight” response. Like most things in life, though, balance is key.
Cortisol “affects nearly every organ and tissue in the body, but women may be especially vulnerable to its effects due to the interplay between cortisol and female sex hormones like estrogen and progesterone,” says Tanya Zuckerbrot, MS, RD and CEO of F-Factor.
Its impact grows during perimenopause and menopause when our estrogen levels drop. This amplifies the stress response and makes it harder for the body to regulate cortisol, which can trigger unwanted weight gain. In fact, chronically-elevated cortisol is linked to “increased abdominal fat, disrupted menstrual cycles, sleep disturbances, mood swings and insulin resistance,” Zukerbrot says. She explains that excess cortisol “promotes fat storage and increases appetite, especially for high-sugar, high-fat foods, breaks down muscle tissue to lower metabolism over time and causes blood sugar spikes and crashes, increasing insulin resistance.” Chronically elevated cortisol also makes us more likely to overeat when stressed because it interferes with leptin and ghrelin, our hunger and satiety hormones.
What is a cortisol cocktail?
There’s no hard and fast recipe for this drink, also known as an “adrenal cocktail,” as each person typically mixes it to their own liking. However, there are a few constants.
The juice usually contains ingredients like ashwagandha, which helps with stress, L-theanine for relaxation, magnesium to support calmness and B vitamins for energy, says Raj Dasgupta, MD, ABIM quadruple board-certified physician and medical reviewer for the National Council on Aging.
“Adaptogens like rhodiola or holy basil might also be added to help the body handle stress better,” he says. “The exact mix and amounts can vary.”
Vitamin C from sources like citrus or powdered supplements, and electrolytes such as potassium or sodium, are also often included as well, adds Chris Mohr, PhD, RD, fitness and nutrition advisor at Fortune Recommends Health.
What’s in a typical cortisol cocktail recipe?
Most often you’ll see a blend of orange juice, coconut water, cream of tartar and salt (like in this cortisol cocktail recipe), says Michelle Routhenstein, MS RD CDCES CDN, Preventive Cardiology Dietitian at EntirelyNourished.com.
The core intention behind this recipe is to improve adrenal health by revving your adrenal glands. These are small organs that sit at the top of your kidneys and make vital hormones like aldosterone, cortisol, adrenaline and noradrenaline.
These hormones are important for maintaining metabolic functions such as managing blood sugar levels and taming inflammation, regulating the balance of salt and water and controlling the body’s “fight or flight” response to stress.
“It’s less about the drink itself and more about creating a ritual that centers and hydrates you,” Zuckerbrot says.
How a cortisol cocktail may reduce stress
“This mix is supposed to help reduce stress and promote relaxation,” explains Mohr. “Magnesium may help calm the nervous system, vitamin C may support adrenal function and electrolytes help with hydration and cellular function.”
Ashwagandha and L-theanine help calm the nervous system, magnesium improves sleep and adaptogens help the body cope with stress, adds Dr. Dasgupta.
Together, these nutrients may lower cortisol levels, improve your body’s stress response, boost mood and improve sleep quality. But at the moment, there is no scientific evidence to prove that this drink has such effects.
The good news? It’s generally considered safe, and experts say there’s no harm in consuming these ingredients in moderation. In fact, they are all necessary nutrients for regular body functioning, says Jennie Stanford, MD, Obesity Medicine Physician and medical contributor for Drugwatch. They usually can be obtained from a well-rounded diet, she adds.
Can a cortisol cocktail boost weight loss?
Despite claims that a cortisol cocktail speeds fat burn, our experts agree that there is no scientific evidence that any combination of these ingredients directly supports weight loss.
That said, lowering cortisol can help reduce stress-related cravings and prevent weight gain, notes Dr. Dasgupta, and improved sleep (due in part to ingredients like magnesium) can help you maintain a healthy metabolism.
“There could be some indirect benefits of a cortisol cocktail,” offers Mohr. “Consistently-elevated cortisol levels are linked to higher fat storage, especially around the belly. But there are many more factors that play a role in overall body weight. It’s not a magic recipe for weight loss, but it can support overall stress management if part of an overall effort geared towards doing the same.”
Indeed, Routhenstein says a more effective approach to weight loss than a cortisol cocktail involves maintaining a balanced diet that ensures nutritional adequacy alongside addressing sleep, chronic stress and exercise.
Symptoms of high cortisol
While lab testing can offer more precise insight, Zuckerbrot says that these early warning signs might indicate high cortisol levels:
- Persistent fatigue (especially mid-afternoon crashes)
- Difficulty falling or staying asleep
- Anxiety, irritability or feeling “wired but tired”
- Sugar and salt cravings
- Weight gain, particularly around the midsection
- Irregular or absent periods
- Acne or thinning skin
- Hair loss
- Digestive issues like bloating or constipation
More natural ways to lower your cortisol levels
“High cortisol doesn’t have to control your health story,” Zuckerbrot says. “By understanding the body’s signals and supporting it with smart nutrition, consistent routines and stress resilience tools, women can reclaim their energy, their metabolism and their sense of calm—without extreme diets or supplements.”
Here, additional ways to support healthy cortisol levels:
Eat balanced meals
Avoid skipping meals or extreme fasting. Eating fiber and protein-rich meals at regular intervals helps stabilize blood sugar and keeps cortisol steady.
Get more sleep
Zuckerbrot recommends aiming for seven to eight hours of quality sleep per night. Why? Sleep deprivation increases cortisol the following day.
Exercise smarter, not harder
“Intense HIIT workouts every day can be counterproductive,” Zuckerbrot cautions. “Incorporate yoga, walking or Pilates several times a week. A 2020 Frontiers in Psychology study showed that just 20 minutes of mindful walking lowered cortisol levels significantly.”
Try mindfulness
Deep breathing activates your parasympathetic nervous system, the body’s natural relaxation response. Zuckerbrot recommends apps like Insight Timer or Calm to help create the healthy habit.
