Many of us know the bad relationship between low thyroid function and weight gain. It can be a reckless duo like Bonnie and Clyde. “The thyroid is like our body’s gas pedal, determining how many calories we burn,” says Jacob Teitelbaum, MD. What’s left over gets stored as belly fat. Fortunately, the doctor has a plan that helps solve both parts of the problem. Keep reading to learn how the thyroid belly fat diet works and how real women like Shannon Clark lost 236 pounds!

What is a thyroid belly?

The butterfly-shaped thyroid gland in your neck is often called the master of your metabolism. But a “thyroid belly”—the weight we gain from having a faulty gland—can take various shapes. It can look like a soft abdominal pooch or a firm “beer belly” caused by swelling and fluid retention.

Have you ever had your thyroid levels checked?

This thyroid-related belly fat can be especially hazardous to our health if it builds up around our vital internal organs. That type of fat, known as visceral fat, is linked to health issues like heart disease, diabetes and high cholesterol.

How a faulty thyroid triggers belly fat

Inflammation has a lot to do with this type of weight gain. On a cellular level, “it can trigger increased appetite and even more weight gain,” warns Dr. Teitelbaum, bestselling author of From Fatigued to Fantastic. Low thyroid hormone levels can also raise the risk of insulin resistance, a condition that further drives belly fat gain.

What’s more, “Nutritional deficiencies are leaving most women at risk for low thyroid and increased inflammation and weight gain,” says Dr. Teitelbaum. Indeed, he says modern food manufacturing practices combined with an increase in the amount of processed fare we eat have led to a 50 percent drop in our intake of vitamins and minerals.

So it’s no surprise that cases of low thyroid have doubled in recent years. “Over 25 percent of women have thyroid inflammation, and that’s just the tip of the iceberg. Most of them are undiagnosed,” he cautions.

A mineral boost is at the center of the thyroid belly fat diet

To protect your thyroid and eliminate or prevent a thyroid belly, Dr. Teitelbaum suggests boosting your stores of nutrients that are vital to the gland’s function. “The body needs iodine, selenium, zinc and magnesium, plus B vitamins and tyrosine for producing thyroid hormone.” It also thrives with vitamins C, E and D to support immunity and calm inflammation.

The method may sound simple, but it’s surprisingly effective. In an Italian study, overweight, low-thyroid patients supplementing with selenium lost 100 percent more belly fat and improved their thyroid function compared to those taking a placebo. And in another study, people who boosted their iodine levels improved their thyroid function by 55 percent and lowered their BMI.

How to follow the thyroid belly fat diet

You’ll want to start by buildling meals around clean protein sources, healthy fats and plenty of anti-inflammatory fruits and veggies. Many women also see benefits from limiting gluten and sugar to prevent insulin spikes that force the body to store even more belly fat.

You can get thyroid-supporting nutrients by taking multivitamins and eating whole foods like Brazil nuts, eggs, turkey and dark chocolate. Or Dr. Teitelbaum suggests supplementing with a high-potency nutrient blend. He recommends Terry Naturally Energy Revitalization Drink Mix. He finds people taking it see improvements in thyroid symptoms within four to six weeks.

Thyroid belly fat diet success: Shannon lost 236 pounds!

When Shannon Clark, 58, reached 503 pounds with a diagnosis of hypothyroidism, her doctor warned, “You can plan your funeral, or you can do something about it.”

“Looking back, my thyroid was definitely working against me,” Shannon says. “It felt like my metabolism was stuck in slow motion. I was constantly exhausted, retaining water and gaining weight even when I was careful.”

As for her thyroid belly: “I was swollen and inflamed. I felt like I was carrying around a balloon of water weight. It wasn’t just fat; it was a kind of full-body puffiness that felt different.”

She says, “Once I understood how much the thyroid affects metabolism and energy, it all made sense. It wasn’t about willpower—it was a real, biological issue that made every pound harder to manage.”

Following a thyroid belly fat diet boosted her metabolism

To feel better, the Texas-based dental consultant started taking thyroid medicine under her doctor’s care. She also focused on eating anti-inflammatory foods and removed dairy and processed carbs like bread from her diet. She got more thyroid-supporting minerals, especially selenium and magnesium, from meals and supplements.

Bloating dramatically decreased. “I started seeing my face again in the mirror,” she says after dropping 32 pounds in 24 days. “The connection between inflammation and weight was real. Changing my diet helped more than I ever expected.”

Shannon lost 20” from her waist

“I’ve learned that small changes create big shifts,” she says. “Eating real food helped. I sleep better and feel more clear-headed.” And her thyroid belly shrunk. She no longer needs a seat belt extender. “I feel like my body and I are working together!”

In all, Shannon’s clothing size fell from 34 to 14 and she shed 236 pounds. And she lost a whopping 20 inches in her belly alone. What’s more: “My thyroid function and blood sugar levels have both improved.” She says, “For the first time I feel like I have a future!”
