How the WeightWatchers program works in 2024
If you’re not too familiar with WeightWatchers, here’s a quick synopsis before getting into what’s new. The iconic weight loss program notably uses a Points system to help you manage your calorie intake. You’re budgeted a certain allotment of daily and weekly points based on individual factors like your goals and metabolic rate (calculated using your age, height, weight and sex).
Each food is assigned a points value based on its nutritional quality as it relates to ingredients like saturated fats, sugar, fiber and protein. Foods higher in protein, unsaturated fat, and fiber are worth fewer points, while those higher in calories, added sugar and saturated fat are worth more.
WeightWatchers’ new features: dietitians, meal scanning and more
WW’s goal is to offer a holistic, accessible system to boost weight loss and overall health. Here’s a rundown of what the latest update to the WeightWatchers program includes.
1-on-1 counseling with nutrition experts
If you’re in the US and have a WW subscription, you can now connect virtually with a registered dietitian through the WeightWatchers app for as low as $0 depending on your insurance plan. If you don’t have sufficient insurance coverage for the program, alternative payment methods are available. Members can work with nutrition specialists to build a diet plan prioritizing personal food and nutrition behaviors to help boost weight loss and overall health.
More ZeroPoint foods
The company also introduced additional ZeroPoint options, which it classifies as nutrient-rich foods that serve as the foundation of healthy eating. These don’t require any tracking, weighing or measuring, and your Points budget remains the same no matter how much of them you eat. The program now includes select cuts of dark chicken, turkey and lean meats, oats and even starchy vegetables, such as potatoes, plantains and parsnips, as ZeroPoint foods.
Vegetables, regardless of their starch content, are packed with fiber and essential minerals—critical components of a healthy and balanced eating pattern, says Michelle Cardel, PhD, MS, RD, WeightWatchers’s Chief Nutrition Officer.
Be sure to check your specific plan, as the WeightWatchers Diabetes Program has a different set of ZeroPoint foods.
Macros tracking
Now, in addition to points, you’ll be able to see a breakdown summary of protein, carbohydrates, fat, fiber and sodium in your foods. This is designed to help you count your macros, or macronutrients, and reach unique goals like building muscle, explains Cardel.
Photo meal scanner
No need to manually enter points anymore, as they can now be logged in the app by uploading a photo of your meals. The app will then provide the ingredients, portions and Points almost instantly.
Recipe analyzer
In addition to the WeightWatchers recipes, members can now input any online recipe into the WeightWatchers app to receive a quick Points calculation.
How to access the latest WeightWatchers features
These new features are now available for WW members—just update your app to start using them! If you’re not a current subscriber but are interested in joining, you can check out plans and pricing starting from $11 per month.
WeightWatchers also recently began offering access to compounded semaglutide, in addition to name-brand and generic weight loss medications, for those who qualify. The company also offers a custom plan for people taking weight loss medication.
You should always consult with your doctor about the best nutrition plan for you, especially if you’re taking semaglutide or another weight loss drug.
