Doctors Reveal the Best Juice for Fatty Liver Repair, Plus More Healing Drinks
Soothe symptoms of a fatty liver like fatigue and bloating with these delicious drinks
When there’s too much fat buildup in the liver—which filters toxins and aids digestion—it can get bogged down and trigger symptoms like fatigue and abdominal swelling. The good news? Fatty liver doesn’t have to be a lifelong diagnosis. In fact, even if the condition has progressed to nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD), it can typically be managed and even reversed with healthy lifestyle modifications like changing up your diet. Here, doctors share the best juice for fatty liver repair to help you get started.
How your diet impacts liver health
Alcohol is one of the top contributors to fatty liver damage. Additionally, a diet high in saturated and trans fats, added sugars and processed foods can exacerbate fatty liver by contributing to excess fat accumulation and inflammation.
In terms of keeping your liver healthy, a diet rich in fiber, fruits, vegetables and healthy fats (such as the Mediterranean diet) is your best bet.
The best juice for fatty liver repair
Healthy drinks are not a cure-all and work best with a nutrient-rich diet and regular physical activity, says Po-Chang Hsu, MD, physician and medical content expert at Alpas Wellness. Still, they can play an important part in preventing liver damage (just be sure to watch for added sugar). To help combat excess fat in the liver, try working some of these juices and antioxidant-rich drinks into your daily diet.
Beet juice
Beets are packed with nutrients called betalains and nitrates, which have potent antioxidant and anti-inflammatory effects, explains Dr. Hsu. Beetroot juice supports your liver by enhancing detoxification and protecting liver cells from oxidative stress, he says.
He recommends drinking beet juice in moderation, though, as beet juice is naturally high in sugar. You can get all the benefits from just 1 cup each day, especially if you opt for freshly juiced beets, he says.
Green celery juice

Getting your daily fix of greens is essential to ward off the health problems that can come with fatty liver disease. Celery is especially hydrating and contains nutrients that stimulate the production of liver enzymes, aiding in detoxification and reducing fat buildup, explains Amy Myers, MD, Functional Medicine Physician.
Leafy greens, especially spinach and kale, are also rich in antioxidants and fiber, which are key elements of a healthy fatty liver diet, she adds. Aim for about 1 cup a day.
Mixed berry juice
Blueberries, raspberries and strawberries are rich in polyphenols and anthocyanins, which reduce inflammation and oxidative stress in the liver, Dr. Hsu says. They also improve insulin sensitivity, which is essential for managing fatty liver.
“Blend 1 cup of mixed berries with unsweetened almond milk or yogurt for a refreshing smoothie,” he offers. “Aim for one smoothie daily, either as a snack or part of your breakfast.”
More drinks that help reverse fatty liver
Juice isn’t the only drink that can help repair a fatty liver. These tasty sips pack powerful healing benefits, too.
Green tea
Green tea is loaded with catechins, antioxidants that help reduce liver fat and inflammation, explains Dr. Hsu. “Research shows that regular consumption of green tea can improve liver enzyme levels and reduce fat accumulation in people with NAFLD,” he says. “Aim for 2-3 cups per day. To maximize its health benefits, avoid adding sugar or sweeteners.”
Lemon water

Simple but effective, lemon water provides a natural source of vitamin C and antioxidants that can help stimulate liver function and detoxification, explains Dr. Hsu.
“The citric acid in lemons can also enhance digestion and help your body break down fats more effectively,” he says. He suggests starting your day by squeezing the juice of half a lemon into a glass of warm water and sipping before breakfast.
Turmeric latte
A turmeric latte, also known as golden milk, combines turmeric with milk and black pepper in a cozy sipper. “Turmeric contains curcumin, a compound with potent anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties,” says Dr. Hsu. “Curcumin has been shown to reduce liver fat accumulation and improve liver enzyme levels. It also stimulates bile production, which aids in fat digestion.”
Dr. Hsu’s serving suggestion is 1 cup daily. You can mix turmeric powder with warm milk (dairy or plant-based), add a pinch of black pepper to boost absorption and a small amount of honey to taste.
