What Is Cedarwood Oil Good For? Dialing Down Stress In Seconds
After a hectic day, I use a few things to feel at ease — from brewing a cozy cup of tea to reading a really good book. Essential oils are another of one of my go-tos for relaxing. With such powerful scents, they instantly put you in a calm state of mind. Now, I have plenty of the more popular lavender and vanilla-scented oils. And yet one that’s caught my eye recently is cedarwood essential oil, and it left me wondering, what is cedarwood oil good for?
Is cedarwood essential oil calming?
Cedarwood essential oil is made by extracting various parts of the cedar wood tree using a steam distillation process. This essential oil is known for having an earthy smell and for helping to promote hair growth and improve skin’s elasticity. But that’s not the only thing cedarwood oil can do for you: it’s a natural stress reliever.
A 2018 study published in Physiology & Behavior took a deeper look into the anxiolytic effect (or anxiety-reducing benefit) of cedarwood essential oil in mice. The authors found that a chemical compound called cedrol was creating the effect by increasing serotonin and dopamine (also known as ‘happy hormones’) levels in the brain.
Similar research published in Planta Medica also credited cedrol for having a relaxing effect on the senses. It’s safe to say that cedarwood essential oil is the ultimate natural solution for stress relief.
Can you put cedarwood oil directly on skin?
Cedarwood oil is safe to put directly on skin. Similar to other essential oils, it’s best to dab a tiny drop onto your skin to test how the oil reacts once applied. Mixing a drop or two of cedarwood oil with a teaspoon of a carrier oil like coconut or jojoba before massaging onto the skin will help you avoid any irritation as well. This oil is available to buy in stores and online. (One to try: Now Foods Cedarwood Essential Oil Buy from iHerb.com, $3.98)
If you’re a fan of aromatherapy, this essential oil is great to use for that. Try placing a few drops of the oil in a diffuser to fill any room with the earthy yet soothing scent of cedarwood (perfect for setting a mood of serenity!).
I can’t wait to add cedarwood essential oil to my nighttime routine. It just might be one of the best ways to let go of the day’s worries, and really relax!
