The Sleepmaxxing Trend Promises Better Rest But the Most Effective Habit Is One You Can Start Tonight
Science says your bedroom is probably too hot for quality sleep. Here's how sleepmaxxing can fix that.
People are taping their mouths shut, slapping static-cling film on their windows and sleeping on water-cooled mattress pads. All in the name of a better night’s rest.
Welcome to sleepmaxxing. The social-media-driven practice of stacking habits, products and environmental changes to squeeze every possible minute of deep sleep has taken over wellness feeds. Some of it sounds ridiculous. Some of it is backed by real science.
Stanford sleep specialist Clete Kushida told National Geographic that the trend has grown partly because people increasingly connect sleep with overall health. Consumer trackers and wearables have made it easy to obsess over your own sleep data.
“People are sleepmaxxing because they want to find ways of maximizing their mental and physical health, or they are having sleep difficulties and are looking for an easy solution to fix it,” Kushida said.
So which sleepmaxxing habits actually matter? If you want to practice good sleep hygiene without buying a dozen gadgets, one of the simplest places to start is your bedroom temperature.
A cool bedroom is the sleepmaxxing habit backed by science
The perfect temperature for sleep falls between 65 and 68°F, though that range may vary slightly from person to person, according to the Sleep Foundation.
The science behind it is solid. In a 2022 study published in One Earth, researcher Kelton Minor and his colleagues analyzed data from more than 47,000 people across 68 countries. They found that warmer nighttime temperatures shortened sleep, largely by delaying when people fell asleep.
The reason is biological. Your body naturally sheds heat through the skin before and during sleep. That process works best when the surrounding environment is cooler than your body.
But staying cool is becoming harder. July 2026 was the hottest month ever recorded in the contiguous U.S. Average overnight lows hit 64.2°F, a full 3.7°F above normal and the warmest on record, according to the National Centers for Environmental Information.
That means the problem isn’t just what happens at bedtime. Sleepmaxxing often focuses on pre-sleep routines, but during a heat wave, creating a comfortable sleep environment may mean preventing the bedroom from overheating hours earlier.
Hot bedrooms measurably disrupt sleep quality
So what happens when your bedroom stays too warm?
A 2023 study that monitored older adults in their own homes found sleep was most efficient at bedroom temperatures between 68°F and 77°F. When temperatures climbed from 77°F to 86°F, sleep efficiency dropped by 5% to 10%. That is a clinically meaningful decline.
Minor’s global research reinforced this on a massive scale. His team analyzed more than 7 million sleep records and found that warmer-than-normal nights consistently shortened sleep across climates and countries. Older adults and people in lower-income countries felt the effects most.
“What we found is that warmer than normal nights erode human sleep. And this is a global phenomenon,” Minor said on the Flash Forward podcast. On nights exceeding 85°F, people slept nearly 15 minutes less than at the study’s optimal temperature.
The outdoor environment is compounding the problem. The EPA says warm nights where temperatures stay above 70°F are expected to become more frequent. That reduces the chance for both people and buildings to cool down overnight.
In other words, the heat doesn’t always leave when the sun sets. And that’s exactly when you need your cool bedroom most.
Air conditioning helps but it’s not a complete solution
The obvious fix is air conditioning. But bedrooms with strong afternoon sun can trap heat long before bedtime, and rising energy costs make running AC through the night harder to afford. For many households, the choice isn’t whether to cool the bedroom. It’s whether they can afford to.
That tradeoff shows up in the data. Earlier research led by Nick Obradovich found that in a 2017 study of about 765,000 U.S. adults, unusually warm nights were linked to more insufficient sleep. But the effect was more than three times larger among people earning below $50,000 than among higher-income respondents. The researchers suggested one likely reason: lower-income households may not be able to afford running AC at night.
It’s a pattern that extends well beyond the U.S. Climate Central vice president for science Kristina Dahl told Scientific American, “We know that people in wealthier countries are losing less sleep when it’s hot, and that’s likely due to having means to cool your home.”
In other words, air conditioning works. But it only works for people who can keep it running.
How to cool down a room without running the AC all day
If air conditioning alone isn’t enough, addressing heat at the source can help.
Static-cling solar film offers renters and homeowners an inexpensive way to block solar heat at the window during the day. If the film reduces daytime heat entering a bedroom, you can save cooling power for nighttime when you actually need it.
Other strategies worth trying:
- Close curtains or blinds before direct sunlight hits the room.
- Use fans to improve airflow and help the room feel cooler.
- Open windows once outdoor temperatures drop below indoor levels.
- Try a bed-cooling system or cooling mattress pad to target the sleep surface directly.
- Switch to breathable or moisture-wicking sheets designed to sleep cooler.
Sleepmaxxing can involve elaborate routines and expensive gadgets. But one of the most effective interventions may be the simplest: keeping afternoon sun from turning your bedroom into a heat trap so the comfortable sleep environment experts recommend is easier and cheaper to maintain at night.
