6 belly-fat burners that can help you lose weight

Research has pinpointed slimming, plant-based compounds that can be taken in the form of easy supplements, extracts and teas. Here are the best ones to help you lose belly fat and support healthy weight management.

Turmeric spice reduces inflammation

Studies show hidden inflammation—often triggered by perimenopause—can block or stall weight loss. “So incorporating a powerful anti-inflammatory like the yellow curry spice turmeric can go to the root of the problem for women,” explains Michelle Schoffro Cook, PhD, author of 60 Seconds to Slim. It literally shifts the body into a weight-loss-friendly zone.

Why it works: Once the body is no longer under the stress of inflammation, the compound curcumin in turmeric improves how the body uses insulin, prevents fat storage and increases fat burn. “Turmeric is an example of how simple kitchen staples can support long-term wellness,” confirms Pamela Tambini, MD, medical director of Engage Wellness. She estimates that consistently using healing spices and supplements can improve body processes related to weight loss—like energy and hormonal signaling—by as much as 15 percent.

Cook adds, “I’ve witnessed incredible results in women.” In a test panel for her book, participants who used plant-based active ingredients, including turmeric, lost significantly more weight than those who didn’t. She says these ingredients “often made the difference between breaking out of a weight-loss plateau or not.”

How to use: Supplement with 500 to 1,000 mg curcumin extract daily or consume ½ tsp. of turmeric spice a day, adding it to soups, curries or savory drinks. Note: Our bodies don’t easily absorb turmeric. So always add a pinch of black pepper, proven to enhance the bioavailability of turmeric by 2,000 percent, says Dr. Tambini.

Berberine supplements calm cravings

This natural compound is growing in popularity as a fat-burning supplement in the Ozempic era.

Why it works: “It works as an appetite suppressant, tricking your brain into thinking you are already full so you are less likely to crave harmful foods,” says Cook. It’s also a multitasker, helping to restore a healthy gut microbiome to make weight loss easier.

Experts even call berberine “natural Metformin” for its ability to control blood-sugar spikes like the prescription diabetes drug. Research shows it may tamp down blood sugar by 57 percent, compared to Metformin’s 25 percent. And biohackers love berberine for its ability to activate an enzyme in the body called AMPK, a “metabolic master switch” that determines whether fat gets stored or burned. In one study, people who stimulated AMPK production shed 636 percent more belly fat.

How to use: Supplement with 500 mg per day, building up to 1 gram. Some experts advise taking it for six weeks, then taking 10 days off to give the liver a break from metabolizing the herb. (Talk to your doctor before supplementing if you have gallbladder disease, GERD or are on blood thinners.)

Green tea tames belly bloat

This is a go-to for dieters, thanks to the compound EGCG, which works in multiple ways.

How it works: “EGCG [a green tea extract] is estimated to boost fat burning by more than 70 percent,” says Cook. “It increases the rate of fat burn, activates fat-burning genes, improves insulin use and reduces cravings for unhealthy foods that can cause weight gain.” Talk about working overtime!

Green tea can also tackle tummy troubles. Leaky gut syndrome is a condition where junk food and artificial sweeteners can inflame and weaken the lining of the gut, causing pain and bloating. But polyphenol compounds in green tea help heal GI issues, according to prelimary research in the Journal of National Biochemistry.

How to use: Aim for up to three cups per day.

Yerba mate revs all-day energy

If you like sipping mugs of soothing, warm drinks, also consider yerba mate. It’s an antioxidant-rich South American drink made from holly tree leaves.

How it works: It contains chlorogenic acid, which helps improve blood-sugar management. Dr. Tambini says that green tea and yerba mate work to increase post-meal calorie burn and fat metabolism “while regulating appetite hormones like leptin and ghrelin to help control cravings and calorie intake.”

It’s also energizing, which comes in handy if you’re looking to add more physical activity to your get-healthy routine. Yerba mate contains around the same amount of caffeine as green tea. Plus, research shows it’s effective at lowering our bad cholesterol and improving blood flow.

How to use: Consider sipping one to two cups daily. Or look for extract supplements, taking about 500 to 1,000 mg once or twice daily.

Chromium stabilizes blood sugar

Our bodies require the trace mineral chromium to balance blood sugar, control appetite and burn fat. But an estimated 99 percent of women are deficient. The remedy: supplementing.

How it works: Many of us are struggling with insulin resistance, a condition where the body can’t recognize how to move trapped blood sugar out of our bloodstream and into our cells to be used as energy. But scientific studies prove chromium works like a key, helping to “unlock” our cells, lowering blood sugar in the process. That subtle internal shift speeds weight loss. When blood sugar levels are safely under control, the body can switch off the emergency alarm telling our cells to hold on to extra pounds.

How to use: Strive for 600 to 1,000 mcg of chromium GTF—the easiest form to absorb—daily.

Creatine protects fat-burning muscle

This protein-like powder is rich in amino acids, which are proven to increase metabolic rate by about 5 percent.

How it works: Creatine prevents new fat cells from forming. But this ingredient is a midlife woman’s best friend because it protects precious muscle mass, which keeps our metabolism revved to the hilt. Research shows that women over the age of 60 who supplemented with creatine powder daily built muscle tissue faster, leading them to burn fat up to seven times quicker than those who took a placebo powder.

How to use: Opt for creatine monohydrate, about 5 grams daily. Stir the powder into yogurt, smoothies, cheesecake recipes and coffee drinks.
