Plus, tips from a stylist on what to look for in a pair of clogs
While there are some trends from the ‘80s we are A-OK with not coming back (looking at you, fingerless gloves and all-over blue eyeshadow), there are a few we can get behind. We love seeing the oversized blazers, leather comeback and high-rise denim, all of which are ’80s trends we’re happy to partake in again. But there’s another that has recently been on the rise: clogs! The slip-on shoe style is a huge trend this fall, and thanks to their practicality, chic style and comfort, we’re all for it. And thankfully, today’s clogs are much more supportive than the pairs you may have worn in high school during the ‘80s, take the Rothy’s version (see below) that are everywhere now. To make it easy, we rounded up the best clogs for women over 50 that are so in for 2024, and are stylish and comfortable. Keep reading for our top picks—plus, insight from a stylist!
What to look for in clogs for women
Choosing the right shoes for your feet is crucial if you want to prevent foot pain and foot conditions in the future. And, if you already suffer from painful foot conditions, choosing supportive shoes is so important for not exacerbating or worsening your pain, and rather treating and relieving it.
Women are more likely than men to develop foot pain—especially the older we get—thanks to factors like wearing unsupportive high heels, pregnancy, weight fluctuations and more. And if you’re on your feet for long periods of the day whether at work, around the house or simply running errands, you need shoes that can keep up and protect your feet.
Clogs with arch support
Many women experience plantar fasciitis, a painful foot condition that can develop from our natural arch “flattening.” To help this pain, look for clogs with arch support. This added arch will relieve pressure from the bottom of your feet and make it easier to be on your feet for longer periods of time.
The heel size of clogs
Make sure you’re choosing a heel height you’re comfortable walking in when picking the best clogs. You don’t want anything too high where you feel unstable, but anything too thin or low to the ground can be unsupportive for your feet. A platform is always nice for absorbing shock and pressure.
The toe style of clogs
This is less about comfort and more about aesthetic, but stylist and partner with TJ Maxx and Marshall’s Sophie Lopez recommends trying a square toe clog. “One of the most important things to look for when you’re doing a clog is the shape of the front. I like the more squarish shapes,” she says. “I feel like sometimes I’ve seen the more delicate heeled ones have a more narrow round toe—I don’t like a full round, so a narrow round is better—or a square I like. And a square is kind of less classic but I think is cool!”
Also, square toe boxes can typically work better for those of us with bunions and/or wide feet compared to narrow, rounded or pointed toes.
