Brooke Shields founded her hair care line Commence in June 2024. She’s 59 years old, and she says that she wanted products that were geared toward women over 40. She explains how this age group is often overlooked and underrepresented in the media and society, and she wanted to do something to change that.
“I started the company during COVID because I wanted to hear from other women over 40 how they felt that they were being received and treated by society, by a culture, and women feel overlooked (and) underserved,” Shields said during Mika Brzezinski’s fourth annual Know Your Value 50 Over 50 luncheon in October. “I always joke that if you look at marketing, you see the hot 20-something at the bar or it’s Depends and dentures. And now it’s just menopause—and it’s brilliant that menopause is a part of the narrative and a part of the conversation, it is—but, they jumped over, and just labeled us as menopause. And, I wanted to hear from women what they wanted, and what they were feeling.
Hence came Commence, “a brand that is dedicated to helping solve problems that women face as they age, as they mature, with menopause and all of the changes that come,” says Shields.
The brand currently has six products: a detoxifying shampoo, a probiotic smoothing conditioner, a root serum, a detangler, a 2-in-1 dry shampoo and a 3-in-1 leave-in conditioner. They are all aimed at women over 40 to help them feel more confident and treat their aging hair.
Many women start to experience changes in their hair around 40 once they enter perimenopause or menopause. You may notice hair loss and thinning, more gray hairs, change in texture and more. “They (women over 40) expressed hair (concerns), so I looked and there was white space—so we dove into hair. You are no longer bound by biology or society or culture or any narrative you’ve been fed,” says Shields.
What Brooke Shields uses to combat hair loss
