Beef tallow for skin is trending across TikTok and other social platforms as more people search for natural, sustainable beauty alternatives that promise simpler routines and fewer synthetic ingredients.

The appeal is easy to understand: it’s simple, animal-based and tied to a growing push for sustainable, minimalist skincare. But while influencers tout it as a do-it-all moisturizer, experts say the science hasn’t caught up with the hype.

In fact, research on beef tallow for skin remains limited, with little clinical evidence proving its effectiveness — and some dermatologists warning that the risks, from clogged pores to irritation, may outweigh any potential benefits.

Here’s everything you need to know.

What is beef tallow and is it actually good for your skin?

Beef tallow is rendered fat from cows — usually from the suet that surrounds the kidneys and other organs — that’s slowly melted, strained and cooled into a solid balm, according to UT MD Anderson. It has a firm texture at room temperature but melts on contact with warm skin, similar to coconut oil.

Beef Tallow Cured Her Dry Skin at 55: ‘I Even Stopped Wearing Foundation!'

Sure, we all deal with dry skin from time to time. But Ianthe Nauro, 55, found that she was increasingly suffering from sensitive skin that just didn’t seem to respond to typical over-the-counter creams or even prescription remedies. In fact, it wasn’t until she discovered a surprisingly natural remedy—anti-inflammatory beef tallow—that she finally got the […]

The product is rich in fatty acids like oleic, palmitic and stearic acids, and has historically been used for cooking, soap making, candle making and as a moisturizer or balm. In skincare specifically, it’s valued for being occlusive — meaning it helps lock in moisture — and for being chemically similar to the skin’s own natural oils.

Why is beef tallow for skin trending?

The current surge in popularity isn’t being driven by clinical research. It’s being driven by influencers, celebrities and brands.

“It gets promoted a lot on social media because it’s natural,” dermatology resident Angela Wei, MD, told the Cleveland Clinic. “People seem to like it because it’s something that’s been around for a long time and marketed as ‘chemical-free.’”

A 2025 study analyzed top posts about beef tallow for skin across YouTube, Instagram and TikTok and found that 82% of posts across all platforms recommended tallow for skincare—yet dermatologists were the least likely to promote it.

The study also found that risks were rarely mentioned, scientific evidence supporting the claims was minimal, very few posts recommended consulting a healthcare professional before use and financial bias was common.

The most common claims centered on using tallow for acne, eczema, psoriasis and as a general moisturizer.

What are the benefits of beef tallow for skin?

The potential benefits of beef tallow for skin center on its fatty acid profile and its similarity to human sebum, though research remains limited.

A 2024 scoping review on tallow’s biocompatibility with skin noted that the fatty acids in beef tallow can help moisturize and hydrate, acting as both emollients—which smooth and soften skin—and occlusives, which form a protective seal over the surface.

Beef tallow also contains small amounts of fat-soluble vitamins, including A, D, E, K and B-12, which can play a role in cell turnover, inflammation, UV damage response and wound healing.

How To Make Beef Tallow at Home: A Simple, Money-Saving Recipe

All-natural, old-fashioned beef tallow is becoming ultra popular these days as people look for healthier, less-processed cooking oils. In fact, major restaurant chains including Outback Steakhouse and Popeyes have recently switched from using controversial seed oils to natural beef tallow in their commercial kitchens for health reasons. Here we share how to make your own […]

“Its fatty acids closely resemble the natural oils of the skin, allowing it to effectively replenish moisture,” Michele Green, MD, a board-certified cosmetic dermatologist in New York City, told GQ in May 2026.

“Linoleic acid, a type of fatty acid in beef tallow, also has known anti-inflammatory properties that can reduce redness and swelling,” Green added.

What are the risks of using beef tallow on skin?

Experts caution that “natural” doesn’t automatically mean “effective.” Many of the bolder claims circulating on social media—that beef tallow can clear acne, treat eczema or replace an entire skincare routine—aren’t supported by robust clinical trials.

In fact, some of the potential side effects flagged by experts include:

Clogged pores and breakouts, particularly on acne-prone skin

Irritation that can worsen sensitivity, rosacea or cause reactions, especially when fragrance is added

Allergic reactions including redness, itching or rashes

Heavy, greasy feel that may not suit oily or combination skin

No sun protection, which may increase risk of sunburn if used as a daytime moisturizer alone

Bacterial risk from poor-quality or improperly stored tallow

Inconsistent quality, since many products aren’t tested or tightly regulated

Risk on damaged skin, with experts advising against use on broken or inflamed areas

A core concern is that beef tallow products vary widely from brand to brand, with no standard formulation or rendering process.

“Beef tallow doesn’t have a standard formulation, and it’s not developed in a controlled way,” Dr. Wei told the Cleveland Clinic. “As a result, it is hard to know what each product truly contains, and how many nutrients are actually going into the skin to create the effects they claim.”

How to use beef tallow for skin safely

If you’ve decided to test the trend despite the limited evidence, dermatologists recommend a cautious, low-frequency approach. The basics of how to use beef tallow for skin start with sourcing—not all tallow is created equal, and cooking-grade products aren’t intended for the face.

Here’s a piece of weight-loss advice you don’t hear every day: Be more like a fast-food restaurant. What?! Or at least consider upgrading from ultra-processed cooking oils to all-natural, unrefined fats like beef tallow, known to have benefits for weight loss. Old-fashioned tallow is trending, thanks to news that restaurant chains like Outback Steakhouse, Popeyes […]

Look for high-quality, cosmetic-grade beef tallow with labels such as “refined,” “skin grade” or “cosmetic grade,” and avoid products marketed solely for cooking. Check ingredient lists for purity and sourcing information before applying anything to your face.

A general routine, according to GoodRX, includes:

Use a very small amount — pea-sized or less, since a little goes a long way

Warm the tallow between clean fingers until it softens, then gently massage it into dry areas

Apply to clean skin for best absorption

Layer it over a hydrating serum or lightweight moisturizer to help lock in moisture

Start slowly, testing it for a few nights before making it part of your routine

Adjust frequency based on your skin type — drier skin generally tolerates it better

Avoid applying it to acne-prone areas, since it may clog pores

Do not use on broken, irritated or inflamed skin

Stop using immediately if you notice breakouts, redness or irritation

Most experts ultimately recommend alternatives with stronger scientific backing.

“There’s no evidence that shows beef tallow has any additional benefits for your skin beyond being a natural moisturizer,” Dr. Wei told the Cleveland Clinic. “There are other moisturizers out there with more consistent formulations that are better and safer for use on the skin.”

For consumers weighing the trend, the bottom line from dermatologists is straightforward: beef tallow may work as a basic moisturizer for some skin types, but the bold claims fueling its viral rise aren’t backed by clinical research—and safer, better-tested options already exist.

If you’ve been watching the “less is more” skincare shift gain traction, here’s the practical playbook. A handful of targeted products — applied in the right order — can give your skin a polished, even-toned finish that rivals a full makeup routine. The approach is strategic, not excessive, and the results are immediate enough to notice before you walk out the door.

This isn’t about a 12-step regimen or chasing every viral product. It’s about knowing which steps deliver the highest return on your time and effort. Here are six worth your attention.

Start with vitamin c serum for visible brightness

If you’re optimizing for radiance and long-term skin clarity, vitamin C serum is the foundation to build on. It brightens dull skin, evens your tone and delivers what many describe as a lit-from-within glow.

The results aren’t just anecdotal. Harvard Health Publishing writes: “One study showed that daily use of a vitamin C formulation for at least three months improved the appearance of fine and coarse wrinkles of the face and neck, as well as improved overall skin texture and appearance.Further, vitamin C can reduce the appearance of dark spots by blocking the production of pigment in our skin.”

That combination — wrinkle improvement, texture refinement and dark spot reduction — makes it one of the most efficient single products you can add.

Lock in hydration with moisturizer

Moisturizer does more than hydrate. It calms and plumps your skin, which makes your tone look more uniform — even without makeup. When skin is dry or dull, redness and dry patchiness stand out more. Moisturizer smooths those distractions away.

There’s a practical bonus here too. Moisturized skin makes makeup glide on effortlessly, so if you want to apply a light tinted serum or concealer, it’ll look blended and natural rather than cakey or uneven. Think of it as prep work that makes every other product perform better.

Target the eyes with a dedicated cream

The skin around your eyes is thinner and more delicate than the rest of your face, which is why it tends to show fatigue first. A hydrating eye cream brightens eyes, plumps up the skin and helps reduce puffiness.

The ingredient list matters here. In Good Housekeeping, Marnie Nussbaum, M.D., a dermatologist in New York City and clinical instructor of dermatology at Weill Cornell Medical College says: “To target dark circles, seek out niacinamide or vitamin C; and for puffiness, use a formula with caffeine.”

That’s a simple decision framework: match the ingredient to the concern you’re trying to solve.

Consider toner for an extra edge

Toner isn’t essential, but it’s the kind of optional step that separates a good routine from a great one. “You don’t need a toner, but swiping one on can be a great way to refresh skin, remove any residual debris and balance pH,” says Dr. Magovern in Good Housekeeping.

If you’re looking for more from this step, modern formulas have evolved significantly. Dori Price and April Franzino also add: “If you’re looking for additional complexion-purifying and brightening benefits, today’s toners are much more advanced than the drying alcohol- and astringent-based formulas of the past, packed with skin-boosting benefits that can leave skin glowing.”

Use sunscreen as a finishing step

Sunscreen is one of the simplest ways to make your skin look more polished. It helps create a smoother, more even-looking finish, softening the appearance of texture and giving your skin a subtle glow. Some formulas can also reduce the look of redness or add a light tint, making your complexion appear more balanced and finished even without makeup.

One thing to watch for: not all formulas work for every skin type. According to Karl Molvar with Vogue: “Many SPFs contain multitasking ingredients, but New York dermatologist Ellen Marmur says to ‘avoid anything with salicylic acid—which can further irritate rosacea—and instead stick to botanicals that minimize redness, such as chamomile, aloe, cucumber, and oat extract.’”

Keep a hydrating face mist on hand

This is the sleeper pick in any polished routine. A hydrating face mist works as a quick refresh throughout the day — and it pulls double duty.

Hallie Gould with Byrdie writes: “According to dermatologist, Brendan Camp, MD, face mists offer a spritz of refreshing hydration that can immediately quench thirsty skin. ‘Some facial mists contain minerals or nutrients that can be beneficial for skin health, too,’ he says. Face mists can also be used as primers in makeup application.”

The versatility is what makes mists worth noting. Dermatologist Rachel Nazarian also told Byrdie: “Face mists are included in skincare regimens to add additional skin benefits, so their ingredients vary depending on the skin concern being targeted: hydration, irritation, inflammation, anti-aging, pigment, etc.”

The takeaway

The smartest skincare routines aren’t about doing more. They’re about choosing the right steps and layering them strategically. Vitamin C for brightness, moisturizer for a smooth base, eye cream for targeted repair, toner for an optional boost, sunscreen for protection and polish, and a face mist for on-the-go hydration. Six steps. No guesswork. A polished look before you’re out the door.

If you are entering or already enjoying retirement, the last thing you need is a bathroom counter cluttered with expensive products that do not deliver. The good news: effective skincare in your 50s and beyond does not require a dozen steps or luxury brand names. It requires knowing which steps are essential, which are optional and which ingredients actually work — so you spend wisely and see real results.

Here is a clear, no-nonsense breakdown of what matters most for your skin right now and where you can save.

Why your skin is changing

Understanding the shift helps you spend smarter. The Skincare Institute explains it plainly: “By your 50s, estrogen production drops significantly, resulting in less collagen, thinner skin, and reduced oil production. These changes can leave your skin feeling dry, dull, and more sensitive than before.”

That last line is key. Some steps are truly essential. Others are nice additions if the budget allows. Knowing the difference saves you money.

The essential morning steps

Gentle cleanser — essential. Choose a hydrating, non-stripping cleanser in cream or gel form. Avoid harsh foaming cleansers that can dry your skin further. You do not need to spend a fortune here. Look for the word “hydrating” on the label and skip anything that leaves your face feeling tight.

Moisturizer — essential. Look for products containing ceramides, which repair your skin barrier; peptides, which support firmness; or squalane, which provides lightweight hydration. These are ingredient categories, not brand names, so you can find them at every price point.

Sunscreen — absolutely essential. This is the single most important anti-aging step you can take. Use a broad-spectrum sunscreen with SPF 30 to 50 every day before going outdoors. It prevents further collagen breakdown and pigmentation. Apply it to all skin that clothing will not cover.

Antioxidant serum (Vitamin C) — worth considering. A Vitamin C serum helps brighten skin, even tone and protect against environmental damage. It also supports collagen over time. If you are going to add one serum to your routine, this is a strong candidate.

Hydrating serum — optional but helpful. Products with hyaluronic acid or glycerin draw moisture into the skin and plump fine lines. If your moisturizer already feels hydrating enough, you may not need this extra step.

Sun protection that costs nothing

Before you reach for another product, consider what the American Academy of Dermatology Association recommends — habits that are completely free. The AAD advises: “Gloves help to minimize common signs of aging on our hands such as age spots. Sunglasses help reduce fine lines around our eyes. Slather on the sunscreen every day before going outdoors. To protect your skin, apply sunscreen to all skin that clothing will not cover. You want to use a sunscreen that offers broad-spectrum protection, SPF 30 (or higher), and water resistance.”

A hat you already own, a long-sleeved shirt and some shade go a long way — no purchase required.

Plus, why you really should be wearing it every day

The nighttime routine

Cleanser — essential. Remove makeup, sunscreen and the day’s buildup. Double cleanse if you wear makeup or SPF. Lois Joy Johnson with AARP offers practical guidance: “Select a cleanser that makes your skin feel soft, supple and clean. It might be a bar soap, liquid, milk, foam, gel or cream. Trendy micellar water contains tiny balls of oil molecules suspended in water and, in my opinion as a beauty expert, is better for a light cleanse and for those who wear minimal makeup or have sensitive skin. At night double cleanse using a separate makeup remover (wipes are great) to kindly but thoroughly get makeup and sunscreen off and out of pores.”

Retinoid or retinol treatment — essential. This is the gold standard for aging skin. It helps with wrinkles, texture and collagen production. Start slow — two to three nights per week — then build up gradually. Your skin will thank you for the patience.

Night moisturizer — essential. Use a richer cream at night focused on barrier repair. Look for ceramides, fatty acids and cholesterol in the ingredients list.

Eye cream — optional. It can help with dryness and fine lines, but it is not mandatory if your moisturizer works well around the eyes. That is one product you can skip without guilt if money is tight.

Weekly extras: nice but not necessary

Exfoliation (once or twice per week): A gentle chemical exfoliant like lactic acid or PHA can improve texture and brightness. But here is the critical warning — avoid over-exfoliating. Your skin is more delicate in your 50s, and doing too much causes more harm than good.

Hydrating mask (once or twice per week): Great for boosting moisture and soothing the skin, but entirely optional.

The bottom line: spend smart, keep it simple

You do not need a 10-step regimen or prestige price tags. A gentle cleanser, a solid moisturizer, sunscreen and a retinol at night form the backbone of effective skincare after 50. Everything else is a bonus you can add when it fits your budget. Spend on what works, skip what does not and trust that simpler is often better.

Between soccer practice pickups, grocery runs and the never-ending mental load of keeping a household running, your skincare routine probably consists of whatever is fastest. Maybe it’s a splash of water in the morning. Maybe it’s falling asleep before you even think about washing your face. You are not alone.

But if turning 40 has you noticing changes in the mirror — more fine lines, duller skin, dryness that wasn’t there before — you don’t need a 12-step routine or a shopping cart full of expensive serums. According to dermatologists, you need a handful of key ingredients, a morning-and-night framework and permission to keep it simple.

Here’s what actually matters.

Your skin has changed — your routine should too

In your 40s, skin naturally produces less collagen, becomes drier and shows fine lines more easily. That lightweight lotion you’ve used since your 20s? It might not be cutting it anymore.

The focus now should be on repair and hydration, not just prevention. The good news is that a few smart swaps can make a real difference — without adding 20 minutes to a morning that’s already chaotic.

The morning essentials: sunscreen and vitamin C

If you do only two things in the morning, make them these.

Sunscreen is still your No. 1 anti-aging tool. Daily SPF is non-negotiable. It prevents deeper wrinkles, stops dark spots from getting worse and protects thinning skin. Use SPF 30 or higher every single morning — even on cloudy days, even if you’re “just running errands.”

This is the single most effective product in your routine, and it doesn’t have to be expensive.

Add a Vitamin C serum before your sunscreen. This is the ingredient that gives skin that brighter, more awake look — something most parents of young kids could use. It brightens dull skin, helps with dark spots and protects against environmental damage.

Miami-based cosmetic dermatologist Dr. Loretta Ciraldo tells Byrdie: “Vitamin C is a terrific skin brightener with firming benefits since it boosts collagen and has antioxidant and UV protection benefits as well.”

Two products. Done. That’s your morning.

Standing in the skincare aisle can feel like navigating a maze. Rows of serums, creams and cleansers line the shelves, each one promising to turn back the clock. If you’ve ever found yourself staring at all those options and wondering, “What do I actually need?” — you’re far from alone. The skincare industry can feel […]

The nighttime routine: moisturizer and retinol

Evenings are when your skin does its repair work — so let it.

Upgrade your moisturizer. Light lotions often aren’t enough anymore. Look for cream-based formulas with ceramides, which repair the skin barrier; hyaluronic acid, which hydrates and plumps; and peptides, which support firmness. Cream-based formulas usually work better than gels at this stage.

Dermatologist Dendy Engelman tells Byrdie: “With crow’s feet, you need to target the area to reduce wrinkles.” Dr. Engelman also says that masks that fade brown spots and reduce hyperpigmentation can be a good option.

Start retinol if you haven’t already. If there’s one ingredient dermatologists consistently recommend for your 40s, this is it. Retinol smooths fine lines, improves texture and boosts collagen over time.

The key is starting slow — two to three nights a week — to avoid irritation. Your skin will adjust. There’s no need to go all-in on night one.

Dr. Engelman tells Byrdie: “Retinoids help treat two major causes of acne: dead-skin buildup and inflammation.”

The mistakes to avoid (and the money to save)

Here’s where budget-conscious parents can actually save: by not overdoing it.

Don’t over-exfoliate. Your skin is more sensitive now. Stick to one to two times per week using chemical exfoliants like lactic acid rather than harsh scrubs. Overdoing it can actually make skin look older, not younger. That’s money and effort working against you.

Don’t forget your neck and chest. These areas show aging fast. The fix is simple: extend whatever you’re putting on your face — moisturizer, sunscreen, retinol — down to your neck and chest. Same routine, no extra products needed.

The free stuff that matters most

Here’s the part no product can replace, and it won’t cost you a cent.

In your 40s, lifestyle factors show up on your skin more than ever. Sleep quality, stress levels, hormonal changes and hydration all play a major role. No serum can fully outdo poor sleep or chronic stress.

This isn’t meant to add guilt to an already full plate. It’s a reminder that drinking an extra glass of water, getting to bed 30 minutes earlier or finding small ways to manage stress may do as much for your skin as anything in a bottle.

Your simplified cheat sheet

Morning:

– Vitamin C serum

– Moisturizer

– Sunscreen (SPF 30+)

Night:

– Gentle cleanser

– Retinol (2–3 nights per week)

– Rich moisturizer with ceramides, hyaluronic acid or peptides

Weekly:

– Gentle chemical exfoliant (1–2 times)

That’s it. No 12-step routine. No cabinet full of products collecting dust. Just a few intentional steps that dermatologists say actually work — leaving you more time and money for everything else on your list.

Dr. Doris Day’s hydrating honey and Coconut oil Soak for dry heels

If dryness is your main issue—heels that feel tight, look ashy or develop fine cracks—this treatment from Dr. Day focuses on deep moisture. The layering strategy here is what distinguishes it from a basic soak. Rather than simply soaking your feet and calling it a night, this approach adds a moisture-sealing finish that keeps working while you go about your evening. You’ll need just a couple of common pantry ingredients and about 10 minutes of your time.

What you need: 2 tablespoons of honey, 1/4 cup of coconut oil and warm water.

How to do it: Add the honey and coconut oil to warm water. Soak feet in the mix for 5 to 10 minutes. Then coat slightly damp feet with a petrolatum like CeraVe Healing Ointment. Cover with cotton socks to seal in moisture.

Skin care experts generally note that applying an occlusive barrier like petrolatum over damp skin helps lock hydration in more effectively than moisturizer alone. The cotton socks create an additional seal, extending the treatment’s contact time while you sleep.

Dr. Doris Day’s gentle rice flour scrub for rough heels

If your heels feel rough to the touch or you’ve noticed thick patches of dead skin building up, this treatment from Dr. Day buffs them away without harsh scrubbing. Rice flour is a notably gentler alternative to coarser scrubs, so if you’ve ever used a pumice stone or foot file and felt like you overdid it, this paste approach gives you more control. The fine grain provides enough texture to slough off dead cells without the aggressive friction that larger exfoliating particles can cause.

What you need: 1 tablespoon of rice flour and 1 to 2 teaspoons of olive or coconut oil.

How to do it: Mix the rice flour and oil to form a paste. Massage on damp feet for 1 to 2 minutes, then rinse and pat dry.

According to Dr. Day, the rice flour gently buffs away dead skin, and the oil adds moisture and softens heels. That means you’re not just removing rough patches—you’re conditioning the fresh skin underneath at the same time.

Dr. Doris Day’s two-in-0ne urea cream for dry, cracked Heels

If you want to hydrate and exfoliate in a single step—or you’re simply looking for the most efficient approach—this is the treatment from Dr. Day to know about. It’s the lowest-effort option of the three, with zero preparation required. No mixing, no soaking, no rinsing. You apply one product directly to your rough heels and you’re done. If you prefer a streamlined, one-product approach, a urea cream may be the smartest addition to your foot care routine.

What you need: A 10-20 percent urea cream, such as La Roche-Posay Lipikar Urea 10 percent Roughness Smoothing Lotion.

Getty

How to use it: Apply the cream directly to rough heels. No mixing required.

Dr. Day explains that the urea draws moisture into the skin while breaking down tough, dead skin cells. That dual action—hydrating and exfoliating simultaneously—is what makes urea creams a standout for heel care. Urea is a compound that naturally occurs in the skin. At the concentrations Day recommends (10-20%), it functions as both a humectant, drawing water in, and a keratolytic, softening the bonds that hold dead skin cells together. This means it can address roughness and dryness in one application without irritating healthy surrounding skin.

Which of Dr. Doris Day’s dIY heel treatments fits Your needs?

Each of the three treatments Dr. Day recommends targets a different aspect of heel care, so the right choice depends on what your feet actually need. You can also rotate between methods depending on what your feet need on any given week, since the soak and exfoliator use common pantry ingredients that are simple to prepare without a trip to the store. The urea cream, meanwhile, is a single product you can keep on hand for quick application whenever you need it.

The honey and coconut oil soak works best if your heels are dry but not particularly rough or calloused—the petrolatum-and-socks finish locks moisture in overnight. The rice flour paste is the pick if thick, dead skin is the primary concern, offering a gentle physical scrub without the harshness of a pumice stone. And if you need to address dryness and roughness at the same time, a urea cream handles both simultaneously, with zero preparation and the least time commitment.

Whether sandal season is days away or still a few months out, having the right fix on hand means you’re not scrambling for solutions at the last minute.

It’s silky smooth, lightweight and formulated to double as a primer—that way, you can layer on your favorite products without worrying about sun damage. While the product has been celebrated for its quality and formula, a 1.7 oz bottle costs $38, and when dermatologists recommend sun protection everyday, using this sunscreen daily and reapplying every 90 minutes to two hours can really add up. Luckily, shoppers and creators have been sharing their best budget-friendly alternatives and Supergoop Unseen Sunscreen dupes. Here, check out a few that stand out.

What is Supergoop Unseen Sunscreen?

This sunscreen became popular when it was released in 2018 as the first-of-its-kind invisible gel sunscreen. It was an instant bestseller because it wasn’t like anything else available and solved a lot of the problems people have with sunscreens, like going on too thick, leaving behind a white cast and having a distinct smell. Instead, Unseen truly sinks into skin, blending in with all skin tones, and feels lightweight. And because this formula has had a cult-like following, it now also comes in a mineral face version and a body version.

The Trader Joe’s Daily Facial Sunscreen SPF 40 has long been declared the tried and true Supergoop Unseen Sunscreen dupe, and that’s because it’s a high quality product for only $8.99! It’s clear like the Supergoop, oil and fragrance free and glides on smoothly.

SPF 40 protects from the sun’s harsh rays, and folks have found this to be a great alternative to the original product. “Just bought Trader Joe’s brand and it is awesome!,” wrote one commenter on a TikTok video sharing the love for the product. “Love it, non greasy, and don’t even know it’s on!”

Kroger jumped on the Supergoop dupe bandwagon

A Supergoop alternative at your local Kroger? We’re obsessed! The Kroger Sunscreen Invisible Gel SPF 40 claims boldly on their packaging that it compares to the active ingredients in the Supergoop Unseen Sunscreen, and the invisible gel offers the same sun protection as the original. Plus, at just $12, it’s hard to beat. Some shoppers have shared that they’ve had trouble finding it in stores, but others have revealed that they tend to be able to find it during the warmer months.

Sun Bum offers Supergoop-like protection

Sun Bum knows what they’re doing when it comes to sun protection, and many have shared online that their Daily 50 Face Gel is the real deal.
e.l.f. has mastered the art of the dupe

For added skin benefits, this sunscreen contains antioxidant-rich meadowfoam seed oil (just like Supergoop) and aloe that help shield skin from the sun to ward off a sunburn and UV damage. Best of all, it also doubles as a primer as it has a grip-like finish to help makeup stay in place all day.

Black Girl Sunscreen provides that same clear sun protection

People have been loving the Black Girl Sunscreen Make It Matte SPF 45 Sunscreen for its silky smooth feel and application. As we move through our 40s, 50s and beyond, collagen production slows, skin becomes thinner and the natural healing process takes longer. That’s exactly why a new ingredient is getting so much attention right now: salmon DNA, also known as PDRN (polydeoxyribonucleotide).

Salmon DNA is derived from salmon and purified into a skincare ingredient used in both serums and in-office treatments to help fight signs of aging. While it may sound like a questionable TikTok trend, experts say there’s real science behind it.

“There’s a major shift toward prioritizing long-term skin health and longevity over just appearance and fast cosmetic fixes,” says Mariana Vergara, NP-C, a Beverly Hills–based cosmetic doctor. “Ingredients like PDRN support the skin’s biology rather than masking damage. PDRN has been used in regenerative medicine for decades, especially in South Korea and parts of Europe, so this isn’t just a trend pulled out of thin air.”

Have you been on the hunt for a miracle skincare product or ingredient that makes skin look firmer, wrinkle-free, radiant and more youthful? Well, you are in luck. That’s because there is an ingredient touted by dermatologists to do just that and it’s retinol. The vitamin A derivative promotes skin-firming collagen production, speeds cell turnover […]

What does PDRN actually do?

At its core, PDRN is designed to help skin repair itself more efficiently. “PDRN works by stimulating cellular repair, improving microcirculation and reducing inflammation,” says Vergara. “It signals fibroblasts to function more efficiently, and those are the cells that produce collagen and elastin.”

Pooja Rambhia, MD, board-certified dermatologist at UnionDerm, adds that this regenerative effect is what makes the ingredient so compelling. “PDRN promotes tissue regeneration by enhancing fibroblast proliferation, increasing collagen synthesis and supporting blood vessel formation,” she explains. It also has antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties, which can help protect skin from further damage.

That matters more with age, when collagen and elastin naturally decline. By helping support those processes, PDRN may improve skin texture, fitness and elasticity over time—while also boosting hydration and radiance.

Topical PDRN (found in over-the-counter products) also has a ton of benefits, says Vergara. “It can improve skin firmness and elasticity, reduce fine lines and wrinkles by improving hydration, enhance skin regeneration and promote healing—especially after treatments like lasers or microneedling.”

Why salmon DNA is especially beneficial in midlife

Unlike traditional anti-aging ingredients that focus on exfoliating or temporarily plumping, PDRN works more on the repair side of things. That makes it particularly appealing for women in their 50s and beyond, when skin may feel thinner, drier or slower to bounce back.

It can also be helpful if your skin has become more sensitive over time. Because PDRN has anti-inflammatory properties, it may help calm irritation while supporting the skin barrier—something that becomes increasingly important with age.

What PDRN can—and can’t—do

While the benefits for skin tone and texture are promising, it’s important to keep expectations realistic. “PDRN is not a traditional filler and does not provide the immediate volumization that hyaluronic fillers provide,” says Dr. Rambhia. “Its benefits are gradual and rely on stimulating the body’s own regenerative processes.”

In other words, it’s not going to lift or tighten skin overnight—or replace treatments for deeper wrinkles or volume loss. Instead, think of it as a supportive ingredient that improves overall skin quality over time by stimulating cell growth.

Research is still evolving, too. While small studies have shown improvements in wrinkles, skin thickness and elasticity, Dr. Rambhia notes that larger clinical trials on PDRN are still lacking. Long-term safety and standardized treatment protocols, particularly for injectable versions of PDRN, are also still being studied.

How to maximize the benefits of PDRN

If you’re curious about trying salmon DNA in your routine, consistency matters more than anything. Topical PDRN products are widely available, but not all are created equal.

Check the ingredient list

“Look for PDRN or polydeoxyribonucleotide clearly listed in the ingredient list, as concentration matters,” says Dr. Rambhia. Because most brands don’t disclose exact percentages, the best way to gauge that is by where it appears on the ingredient list—ingredients listed earlier are typically present in higher amounts. If PDRN is buried at the very end, it’s likely included in only trace amounts. Sticking with reputable brands that are transparent about their formulation or clinical backing can also help ensure you’re getting a product where the ingredient is actually doing something.

Consider topical vs. injectable

“Injectable PDRN delivers the active ingredient directly into the dermis, bypassing the skin barrier entirely,” says Dr. Rambhia, which is why most of the strongest evidence comes from in-office treatments. If you’re considering the injectable route, it’s not exactly a one-and-done treatment. In the U.S., sessions typically cost anywhere from about $500 to $1,200 per treatment. Topical formulas are gentler and more accessible, but may be less potent due to limited penetration.

Apply to damp skin

How you apply topicals also makes a difference. Dr. Rambhia recommends applying it to slightly damp skin rather than completely dry skin, since it performs best when moisture is present. Following with a moisturizer can help seal in hydration and maximize results.

Choose the right formula

In general, dermatologists tend to favor leave-on formats like serums and essences, since they deliver a more concentrated dose of PDRN and stay on the skin longer, giving it more time to work. Creams, on the other hand, can help seal everything in, but often contain lower concentrations of actives compared to serums. Lighter formats like toners can help layer hydration, but may not deliver as much of the active on their own.

Know what to pair it with

Because PDRN is a reparative ingredient, it pairs well with hydrating and barrier-supporting ingredients like hyaluronic acid, ceramides and niacinamide. At the same time, it’s best not to layer it in the same step as strong exfoliating acids or prescription-strength retinoids, which can increase irritation and counteract its soothing effects.

Are there any drawbacks to salmon DNA?

PDRN is generally considered gentle and well tolerated, but managing expectations is key. Because it works by supporting the skin’s natural repair processes, results tend to be gradual rather than immediate.

It’s also important to note that PDRN is not FDA-approved for cosmetic skin rejuvenation in the U.S., and its use in aesthetics is considered off-label in many cases. Injectable forms, while effective, can carry risks similar to other dermal fillers, including rare delayed reactions.

Topical products are much lower risk, but their anti-aging benefits are still being studied, and results may vary depending on formulation. While reactions are uncommon, Dr. Rambhia notes that anyone with fish allergies—particularly to salmon—should proceed with caution and consider patch testing first.

Which PDRN products are worth trying?

If you’re looking to try it at home, Vergara points to a few standout options. “Rejuran is considered the gold standard PDRN brand out of Korea for skin repair and regeneration,” she says. “It uses highly purified PDRN derived from salmon DNA with strong regenerative properties.”

Another option she recommends is Vamp, which takes a more comprehensive approach. “I love this formula because it combines PDRN with vitamins, amino acids, hyaluronic acid and minerals. It not only delivers that regenerative signal, but also supports collagen synthesis, hydration and antioxidant defense.”

More accessible K-beauty brands are also helping bring the ingredient into everyday routines. Medicube, for example, has introduced a growing lineup of PDRN-infused serums and ampoules designed to improve elasticity and skin texture over time.

The bottom line on PDRN

Salmon DNA may sound unconventional, but its appeal lies in something simple: helping skin function better over time. For those of us in midlife, that shift—from quick fixes to long-term repair—can make all the difference in how skin looks and feels day to day.

If your bathroom counter has turned into a miniature beauty aisle and your skin still isn’t cooperating, you’re not alone. But the fix might surprise you. According to beauty expert Laura Geller on Episode 6 of Woman’s World‘s What Matters With Liz show, the problem isn’t that you’re doing too little for your skin. It’s that you’re doing too much.

Her advice runs counter to everything the beauty industry keeps telling us about the next must-have serum or miracle cream. And honestly? It’s a relief to hear.

Stop switching and start committing

Geller, speaking about mature skin, made a point that will resonate with anyone who’s been frustrated by lackluster results despite a cabinet full of products.

“Listen, everybody’s skin is different, even if you’re mature, but I think one thing we would have in common is probably that it’s dry,” Geller said. “Don’t overcomplicate your skincare routine and stick with one thing long enough to see the result.”

That second part deserves a moment. In a marketplace overflowing with serums, creams, essences and treatments, it’s so tempting to chase whatever new product promises faster results. Geller cautioned against exactly that impulse.

“I think the promise of the next new product in a jar is so tempting that everybody jumps from one thing to the next and they don’t give their skin a chance to respond,” she said.

The takeaway is straightforward: consistency matters more than variety. Swapping products every few weeks doesn’t give any single one enough time to deliver. What feels like a product failing might actually be a routine that never got a fair shot.

Laura Geller's '3 E's' Makeup Rule Is the Only One You Need

You know that feeling when you’re standing in the beauty aisle, staring at rows and rows of products, wondering which ones you actually need? Or when you stumble across an online tutorial that requires a dozen different products and what feels like an hour of your morning? You’re not alone. And according to one makeup […]

Too many products can actually backfire

Beyond stalling your results, overloading your skin with too many products can create new problems. Geller warned that layering on too much can lead to real skin issues — and she used an analogy most of us know well.

“Don’t overuse a lot of different things. It’s like someone who uses Chapstick too much, you actually can dry your lips out,” Geller said. “I would say that what it can do is clog your pores. You can end up having milia, blackheads and whiteheads.”

Just as constantly reapplying lip balm can strip your lips of their natural moisture, piling on skincare products can overwhelm your skin rather than help it. Instead of achieving a clearer, more hydrated complexion, you may end up dealing with clogged pores and breakouts — the very issues you were trying to prevent.

If you’ve ever added a new product only to notice unexpected bumps or irritation, this explanation offers a possible reason why. Sometimes, doing less truly does deliver more.

Let your nighttime routine do the heavy lifting

One of Geller’s most practical pieces of advice involves timing. She emphasized that your evening skincare routine is where the real work should happen.

“Your skin responds best in the evening because you’re not putting makeup on top of it and you’re going to sleep and letting your skincare routine work,” Geller said. “You need much less during the day.”

This makes intuitive sense. At night, your skin isn’t battling environmental exposure or sitting under layers of makeup. It has hours of uninterrupted time to absorb whatever you’ve applied. That window is when your products have the best chance of doing what they’re designed to do.

Keep your mornings simple

If nighttime is when the real skincare work happens, mornings should be the opposite: streamlined and uncomplicated.

“So SPF is critical, but you can get that in your moisturizer,” Geller said. “Don’t overcomplicate your morning routine. You did it at night.”

That’s a refreshing perspective for anyone who dreads a lengthy morning regimen. Rather than repeating a multi-step process twice a day, Geller’s approach means focusing your energy on one thorough evening routine and keeping the morning minimal. Moisturizer with built-in sun protection covers your essential bases without an elaborate layering process before you head out the door.

When cold and flu season hits, one of the most popular ways to support immunity is by getting enough vitamin C. Whether you take it as a daily supplement, sip it in a fresh fruit-and-vegetable juice, or enjoy a classic tablet dissolved in water, vitamin C has proven to be a powerful ally. As an antioxidant, it helps neutralize free radicals—unstable molecules that can damage cells and weaken the immune system. By reducing this oxidative stress, vitamin C supports your body’s natural defenses and helps keep your cells functioning at their best.

But what about using vitamin C for your skin? Similar to the way it works within your body, applying a vitamin C serum to your skin “fights harmful free radicals (toxins) that come in contact with your skin from external sources like air pollution, or from inside the body as a result of normal processes like your metabolism,” explains Harvard Health Publishing.

In addition to being a powerful antioxidant, topical drugstore vitamin C serums can also help to fade age spots, eliminate the appearance of wrinkles and more. With so many products on shelves to choose from, we’ve gathered a few of our favorite—and most affordable!—vitamin C serums you can find.

And knowing what it does, how it works, and whether your skin could benefit from it can make a real difference in your daily routine.

So what is hyaluronic acid, exactly?

Don’t let the word “acid” throw you. Hyaluronic acid isn’t harsh or exfoliating. It’s a naturally occurring sugar molecule — technically called a glycosaminoglycan — found in your skin, joints, and connective tissue. Your body already makes it.

What makes it special is its ability to bind 1000 times its volume in water. That’s what makes it such a powerhouse hydrator. It works as a humectant, drawing moisture into the skin and holding it there. That’s different from a traditional moisturizer, which mainly acts as a barrier to prevent water loss.

Here’s a way to picture it: a moisturizer locks the door, but hyaluronic acid fills the room with what your skin actually needs — water.

The catch? Your body’s natural production of hyaluronic acid declines with age, sun exposure, and environmental stress. That’s a big reason so many of us eventually turn to topical products or other forms of supplementation to replenish what’s being lost over time.

Not all hyaluronic acid products work the same way

The science behind how hyaluronic acid interacts with your skin is more nuanced than most product labels let on.

High and low molecular weight hyaluronic acid penetrate the skin differently. Smaller molecules work at a deeper level beneath the skin’s surface, while larger molecules act on top, providing hydration and a plumping effect you can see and feel.

Research published in the Journal of the American Academy of Dermatology looked at a topical solution blending five forms of hyaluronic acid together. The study found that the solution “provided both immediate and long-term improvements in skin texture minimizing the appearance of fine and coarse lines/wrinkles and improving intrinsic skin moisture content.”

That finding points to the value of formulations combining multiple molecular weights rather than relying on just one. Worth keeping in mind next time you’re shopping for a serum.

Your skin may already be telling you it needs this

Tightness after cleansing. Flakiness. Dullness. Fine lines that look more pronounced by the end of the day. These are all telltale signals.

And they point to something specific: a lack of hydration rather than moisture. That distinction matters. Hydration refers to water content within the skin’s cells, while moisture typically refers to the oils that help seal that water in. Hyaluronic acid addresses the hydration side.

If your skin looks tired or feels uncomfortable even when you’re using a moisturizer regularly, dehydration could be the missing piece.

Who sees the biggest results

Nearly anyone can add hyaluronic acid to their routine, but certain groups tend to notice the most difference:

Mature skin, where natural hyaluronic acid production has declined over time

People living in dry or cold climates, where environmental conditions pull moisture from the skin

Retinol users experiencing dryness or sensitivity, since retinol can disrupt the skin’s barrier

Anyone whose skin feels reactive or sensitized, regardless of age or skin type

If any of those sound familiar, a hyaluronic acid product may be worth trying.

The mistake most people make when using it

Here’s where things go sideways for a lot of us: applying hyaluronic acid to dry skin, skipping the follow-up moisturizer, and then wondering why skin feels worse than before.

The right method is to apply it to damp skin and seal it right away with a moisturizer. This gives the humectant the water it needs to draw into the skin, and the moisturizer locks it in place.

Skip that sealing step — especially in a dry climate — and hyaluronic acid can actually pull moisture out of the skin rather than into it. Dermatologists and skincare researchers studying humectant behavior in low-humidity environments have documented this counterproductive effect.

In practical terms: apply your serum right after washing your face while it’s still slightly wet, then follow up promptly with a cream or lotion to trap that hydration.

When a serum won’t be enough

For some concerns, even the best hyaluronic acid serum has its limits.

Deeper volume loss — the kind that creates hollows or significant sagging — or joint concerns related to diminished hyaluronic acid in connective tissue may call for injectables or oral supplementation rather than topical products alone.

In those cases, talk to your dermatologist rather than relying solely on an over-the-counter serum. A medical professional can assess what’s happening beneath the surface and recommend the right approach, whether that’s a prescription-strength product, injectable filler, or a supplement.

A few things to remember

Hyaluronic acid is a molecule your body naturally produces and relies on to keep skin plump, hydrated, and resilient. When that production slows — from aging, sun exposure, or environmental stress — adding it back through well-formulated products can make a meaningful difference.

Apply it to damp skin. Seal it with a moisturizer. Don’t expect a topical serum to address every concern on its own. And if your skin is sending you signals — tightness, dullness, flakiness, deepening fine lines — it may be time to give hyaluronic acid a closer look.
