What are silicone patches?

Silicone face patches, also referred to as “wrinkle patches,” are a non-invasive, at-home treatment geared toward lessening the appearance of wrinkles. They are generally made of medical-grade silicone, which provides hydration to the skin—especially beneficial to women over 50 since skin loses hydration with age, says Noah Gratch, MD, FAAD, a board-certified dermatologist at MDCS Dermatology in New York.

What are some of the benefits of silicone patches?

The patches work by causing compression (holding the skin taut), increasing circulation (which boosts collagen regulation, strengths skin and carries away waste products from the cells) and creating better hydration (by forming an occlusive layer on the skin that creates a micro-climate for hydration), explains Shelley Hancock, a licensed esthetician and Chief Beauty Officer for Skin Experts. “The benefits are temporary, so consistent usage creates consistent results.“ Here, how they can help:

Silicone patches provide hydration and moisture retention

Medical-grade silicone forms a protective barrier on the skin, locking in moisture and preventing trans-epidermal water loss. This helps maintain hydration, which is essential for keeping the skin plump and youthful.

Silicone patches offer enhanced skin repair

Silicone is known to speed up the healing process of skin wounds, burns or scars. It promotes collagen production and helps regenerate the skin by providing a stable, moist environment that can reduce scar tissue formation. This can result in smoother, more even skin over time (more on this below).

Silicone patches help with skin firming and tightening

The barrier created by silicone helps to temporarily tighten skin, giving it a firmer appearance. Over time, this effect can improve skin’s overall elasticity, reducing the appearance of fine lines and sagging.

Silicone patches are non-irritating and gentle

Because 100% medical-grade silicone is hypoallergenic and non-irritating, it is safe for all skin types, including sensitive skin. It does not clog pores or cause breakouts, making it ideal for people with acne-prone or sensitive skin.

Silicone patches can be used for scar treatment

Silicone gel sheets or silicone-based scar treatments are widely used to improve the appearance of both new and old scars, including those from surgery or acne. These products have been shown to reduce scar visibility, improve skin texture and promote a more even skin tone.

Do silicone patches work best on any specific type of wrinkles or part of the face?

Depending on your specific skin concerns, these patches can be used on any part of the face, large or small, says Dr. Gratch. They can also be applied to the neck and chest. “Since silicone patches can help to increase hydration, I would recommend applying them anywhere you see dryness and wrinkles forming like crow’s feet, underneath the eyes, the forehead and the neck.”

How often should you use silicone patches?

You can wear silicone face patches at least three to four times a week for continued increase in hydration and prevention of facial creasing which leads to deep wrinkles, say our experts. “It’s recommended to wear them overnight, but you can also wear them for just one to two hours for a quick boost,” advises Hancock.
