Healthcare Insurance Expert Elena Scofield Marks 10 Years as an Independent Broker, with Over 25 Years in the Industry

Elena Scofield, Founder and President of Scofield Insurance Consulting, is celebrating her 10th year as an independent insurance broker, with more than 25 years of experience in the insurance industry. Scofield specializes in various healthcare and insurance solutions for seniors, including Medicare Advantage, Medicare Supplement, whole life insurance, final expense plans, prescription drug plans, dental, vision, and fixed annuities.

Scofield joined the insurance industry in 1997 at a small company and was quickly recognized as one of its top 10 agents. Over the following years, she worked at several nationwide life and health insurance providers, growing her expertise, particularly in the eldercare sector. According to Scofield, she gravitated towards eldercare out of a desire to help seniors navigate the complicated insurance situation in the US.

During her eight-year stint at one of the large national carriers, Scofield spoke at large seminars, informing senior citizens about health insurance and the importance of having a good insurance plan for their later years. After the Affordable Care Act came into effect, Scofield joined Access Health CT in 2014. After climbing to the top, she left in 2015 and decided to become an independent broker, launching Scofield Insurance Consulting.

“I was quite nervous starting my own business,” Scofield shares. “But, my husband and the rest of the family were behind me, reassuring me that the experience I’ve gained at the big corporations will serve me well. I started my independent work at home, sending out letters to potential clients, before moving to print and TV ads. The journey was not an easy one, and there were lots of ups and downs, but I remained persistent and focused on my goal to become a successful entrepreneur.”

Since then, Scofield has grown her team. From a solo operation, she now has three agents and an office assistant under her wing, and she has plans to expand the company’s reach. Scofield Insurance Consulting now operates in 12 states and is gradually expanding, aiming to be present in all 50. However, Scofield is also wary of expanding too rapidly, to avoid losing the boutique personal level of service that is behind Scofield Insurance Consulting’s success.

Since most of her clients are senior citizens who are now operating in a limited capacity, Scofield makes sure to go above and beyond providing insurance products. Throughout her 25-year career, she has built relationships with medical facilities, senior centers, social workers, and nurses. With the COVID pandemic further exposing the mental health and loneliness crisis facing America’s seniors, Scofield pays attention to her client’s mental health state and refers them to licensed professionals and trusted resources.

“I take a holistic approach to my work,” she says. “It’s not just providing an insurance product. I want to keep clients healthy and have a good quality of life. I was raised to be a caring person, and I extend that to my clients, with our relationships becoming like extended family members.”

A majority of Scofield’s clients are referrals from other satisfied clients. One such client, Dina Koutikas, was referred to by her best friend Yota. Scofield was able to assist Koutikas and her husband in acquiring a better Medicare Advantage plan with the additional food benefits that they needed.

“Just wanted to thank Elena for helping us with our insurance,” Koutikas says. “You are amazingly talented at what you do. I don’t know anyone else with such kindness and compassion. I will never be able to forget you. You are a one-of-a-kind lady. Thank you so much.”

According to Scofield, reaching 10 years as an independent broker is a huge milestone for her and her business, especially since the insurance and financial world has been traditionally male-dominated. This accomplishment is reinforced by Scofield Insurance Consulting being named a Top 10 Medicare Supplement Company by ElderCare Review Magazine in 2023.

“I’ve received many awards throughout my career, but I believe the greatest fulfillment comes from being confident that I’m doing a good job for my clients,” Scofield says. “I always ask myself ‘Did I do the right thing by all of my clients?’ At the end of the day, answering ‘yes’ to that question is what makes me feel that I deserve the award given to me. In the future, I would like to train and employ more agents in my approach, which places high emphasis on caring for clients’ needs. Our primary objective is not to make money. It’s about helping others live a quality life while not being burdened with paying the high costs of healthcare.”
