Jenna Bush Hager reveals her July book club book

On Wednesday, June 24, Jenna went on the second hour of the Today show to announce that her July Read with Jenna pick was going to be The Shampoo Effect by Jenny Jackson, which will be released on Tuesday, June 30. The plot follows Caroline Lash after she arrives in Greenhead, Massachusetts, and falls for a handsome local man named Van Whittaker. She’s quickly drawn into his close-knit circle of lifelong friends. But when an unexpected pregnancy upends the group’s dynamics, buried tensions and old secrets begin to surface.

“This is a novel about the people who have known us our whole lives and the ties that really bind us,” Jenna wrote on Instagram. “It made me think of my own oldest friendships, and I know you will love this one just as much as I do.”

Jenny Jackson reveals how she feels about being a Read With Jenna pick

During the initial on-air announcement, Jenny appeared on the Today Show plaza with Jenna and helped her give out signed copies of The Shampoo Effect to all the fans. She then sat down with Today.com to discuss the novel further.

“Part of writing The Shampoo Effect for me was subconsciously a corrective to write about my hometown and where I’m from, and what that world growing up in Massachusetts was like,” Jenny said. “I wanted to write about friends, because I think that one of the scariest things is realizing that your friendships are conditional. If you’re lucky and you come from a loving family, like I do, your family is going to love you no matter what. Those are unconditional relationships.”

“In some ways it’s like a heightened risk with friends because these are relationships that could break. A lot of us have people who we no longer speak to from our childhood, and it’s heartbreaking,” she continued.

Does Jenny Jackson have any other books?

If you either cannot wait to get your hands on The Shampoo Effect, or have read it and want more from the author, we recommend checking out her debut novel Pineapple Street, which was published in 2023 and was a Good Morning America Book Club Pick. In it, Darley, Sasha and Georgiana Stockton deal with life, love and drama, all while living in Brooklyn Heights and navigating being one of the richest families in New York City.

“I can definitely hear all of my neighbors sighing and saying, there goes the neighborhood. Because, to be honest, one of the things I’ve done with Brooklyn Heights in this book is I have exaggerated it. I’ve turned up the volume on the place,” Jenny told NPR in 2023. “And the reality is, that every Tuesday, when I go grocery shopping at Gristedes, where I use my mother’s senior citizen discount to save money, the grocery store is full of normal people. But reading this book, it would make you think that it was entirely socialites and celebrities. On the other hand, I don’t think any of my neighbors can be too mad at me because, worst case scenario, I just raised their property values.”
