What are her thoughts?
Here, we gathered up everything Yarros has said so far about the upcoming adaptation—from showrunners to scripts, Xaden casting and more! Keep reading for all of the Fourth Wing TV show updates!
Rebecca Yarros’ first reaction to the ‘Fourth Wing’ TV series news
In October 2023, Fourth Wing fans got the news they were dreaming of: Amazon MGM Studios and Oscar-winner Michael B. Jordan’s Outlier Society were officially bringing the book to life as a Prime Video series! Even better? Yarros herself would serve as executive producer, ensuring the adaptation stays true to the story readers fell in love with.
“We’ve been sitting on this news since last DECEMBER and I finally get to tell you,” Yarros shared about the announcement on Instagram. “I’m so humbled and thrilled to announce that FOURTH WING has been optioned and is currently in development for a TV series by Amazon MGM Studios with Michael B. Jordan’s Outlier Society producing!!! They’re an ABSOLUTELY incredible team, and I can’t wait to see their adaptation of Fourth Wing brought to life! I have all the faith in the world in them!”

She continued by praising the show’s team so far. “Huge love and thanks to Amazon MGM Studios, Outlier Society and the team at Red Tower, especially my editor Liz Pelletier for making this possible!,” she added. “And OMMMMG, I get to executive produce, too! Words can’t portray just how excited I am and how grateful to work with such amazing people!”
What Yarros thinks of the script so far: ‘It really is phenomenal’
In recent months, behind-the-scenes updates on the Fourth Wing TV series were swirling everywhere. Meredith Averill was announced as the new showrunner—she has served as an executive producer on Wednesday, Jane The Virgin and The Good Wife. Moira Walley-Beckett was originally tapped as showrunner and executive producer back in July 2024.
Before her departure, Yarros had read and loved a few versions of Walley-Beckett’s scripts—including a potential pilot. “Having read a couple versions of the pilot, I have nothing but respect for her, and watching how she handles the book with such respect and such zeal. It really is phenomenal,” she said to Variety. “Really, just no notes.”

During an event for Onyx Storm in January, Yarros admitted she was worried about reading the script at first. “I’ve read two versions of the script now,” she told fans during the event in a clip posted on TikTok. “And I was scared, I was super scared to read it, because I think when you hand somebody your baby and you say, ‘Tell me what you think is important in here,’ you’re kind of like, ‘It’s all important,’ and I kicked my feet the entire time. I love it.”
At the time of publication, it remains unclear if this means new scripts are happening based on the showrunner swap.
The casting conversation: Bringing Xaden and Violet to life
When it comes to casting for a beloved book series, it’s always serious business. In ravenous fandoms, stories and their characters are held in high esteem by legions of readers. For Fourth Wing, readers already have fanart declaring “our Xaden” and detailed images in their minds. How could real actors ever live up to the hype? Yarros gets it, but she urges fans to stay patient.
“We are not at that point yet [for casting],” she said, noting the series doesn’t even have a casting director yet.
She also shared her thoughts on casting Xaden, which remains an extraordinarily passionate topic in the Fourth Wing fandom. “I’ve had really great conversations about that…and how important it is to me that we not remove marginalized people from the cast.” Rumors on who will portray Xaden range from Dune Prophecy’s Josh Heuston to Riverdale’s Charles Melton.
Rebecca Yarros has 5 book adaptations in the works
Yes, that’s right. In addition to Fourth Wing, Yarros has not one but five books in development for screen adaptations, ranging from active pre-production to early scripting. Her book, In The Likely Event, is another fan-favorite Yarros story. While Yarros is known for her sweeping romantasy books, she also has a slew of contemporary romance novels—like this dual-timeline romance—under her belt.
She noted how the adaptation process between a series and a standalone novel like In The Likely Event is quite different. “It’s just different because whatever book I’m in has my full attention. I have ADHD and I hyper focus in that book. It’s how I can write them so quickly. So when I’m hyper focused in that book, and it is my world, I am building up that world, those rules and those characters,” Yarros said.

“So when that adaptation process happens, it’s very much speaking to the writer and talking to the writer about what’s important to me in that world, and how I built it, what playlists I use, things like that. It’s just a smaller snippet, because it’s more confined, it’s a standalone compared to Fourth Wing.”
When will the ‘Fourth Wing’ TV series air?
Official casting announcements and premiere dates have not yet been released for Fourth Wing’s TV adaptation. But Yarros did recently confirm on Instagram that she was actively working on the next installment in The Empyrean series.
In the caption, she wrote: “Feels like a great day to start a stack of index cards.” Yarros famously uses index cards to plot her layered romantasy plotlines—and hundreds of thousands of fans liked the post. In another post, she explicitly confirmed she is officially working on book four. “And now that my latest contemporary novel is off to my editor, I’m back writing in the Empyrean world for the foreseeable future,” she wrote. “Let’s ride.” Thank the gods!
