Alix E. Harrow is known for spellbinding tales like Starling House—and The Everlasting is a sweeping, genre-defying adventure. Many readers are describing it as “romantasy done right,” with the story following a legend named Sir Una Everlasting—the girl who became a knight and died for a queen. Centuries later, failed soldier and aspiring scholar Owen Mallory worships Una’s story, which actually takes him to war, to the archives and then, somehow, hurls him into the past where a trek of fate and sacrifice begins.
The Everlasting has already earned major recognition, winning the 2026 Locus Award for Best Fantasy Novel and becoming a finalist for the 2026 Hugo Award for Best Novel. Harrow is certainly no stranger to critical acclaim. In addition to The Everlasting, she has published four fantasy novels, two fairy tale-inspired novellas and an award-winning collection of short fiction that has made her one of today’s most celebrated fantasy authors.
When asked to describe The Everlasting in her own words as well as what inspired it, Harrow recalled being enamored with “lady knight” books in her younger years. “It’s kind of a girl’s coming-of-age narrative where she specifically studies or obtains this particularly violent power of some kind. She’s a knight, she gets armor, she gets a sword,” the author told Kaxe.org.
“She becomes powerful in a really particular way that hit for me because it was definitely a gendered type of heroism that I felt was a little bit inaccessible to me that really fulfilled a specific dream of mine.”
‘The Everlasting’ TV series update: How far along is it?
Right now, The Everlasting is still in development at Netflix. The streamer won the rights to Harrow’s hit novel in a “competitive situation,” according to Variety. Daphne Ferraro—who was previously the head writer for Prime Video’s Maxton Hall—is at the helm writing the project and executive producing alongside Harrow and others.
The show is not officially “ordered to series” but fans—and Harrow—are hopeful the project will continue to move quickly.

Harrow took to Instagram on June 23 and told her followers how happy she was, while acknowledging, as is the case with many authors, that she’s had many previous books optioned that failed to go to series. “But this is the first time anybody has been serious enough to want to put it in the paper,” she wrote. “I have all of you to thank, really—they wouldn’t be this serious if ya’ll weren’t so serious about the book.”
“I still can’t promise it will turn into anything…but if it does: I’m so lucky that Daphne Ferraro read this book. What an unbelievable privilege, to have people turn your art into their art.”
Ferraro echoed Harrow’s excitement in her own Instagram post. “My love for this book cannot be overstated,” she wrote. “And being entrusted with its adaptation feels scary in the way only truly great things do…this story needs to be told, not just because it’s achingly beautiful but because it holds meaning we all need right now.”
Fans react to adaptation announcement: ‘I have high hopes’
Fans were thrilled but hesitant to put too much stock in the announcement. Taking beloved characters from page-to-screen is a delicate task and many readers just want to make sure it’s done right. “Alix Harrow is on the development team so I have high hopes for this.
