After several nail-biting rounds of auditions, battles, knockouts, playoffs and then live shows, NBC’s popular singing competition The Voice officially crowned its Season 27 winner during the finale on Tuesday, May 20 after counting up the votes from people all across the country. His name is Adam David, and he was from Michael Bublé’s team. Below, we dive deep into David’s journey on The Voice, including how he came from almost being eliminated in the semi-final round to winning it all just one episode later. Read on for more.

A look at Adam David’s journey on ‘The Voice’

When David,  35, first appeared in the show’s audition round, people loved his bluesy, country music sound. However, out of the four judges—Adam Levine, John Legend, Kelsea Ballerini and Bublé—only the former turned his chair around and asked him to join his team.

From there, David continued to climb the competition ladder not only because of his talent but also because of his inspiring story.

Originally from South Florida, David shared that he has loved singing and playing guitar for as long as he could remember, and when he was struggling with addiction in his late 20s, he said that music was the thing that helped him get sober.

David  has been sober for six years and spends his free time performing at various rehabilitation centers. He does this in the hopes that someone in the audience will feel inspired and hopeful after hearing him perform.

“March 28 was six years [sober] and I got to put on a concert. What I’ve been doing the last couple years is on my anniversary, putting on a concert. So I got to do that this year and we sold out the theater, I’d never done that before,” the singer told Deepest Dream in May. “It was really cool, and it was a special day. But yeah, a lot of people have reached out to thank me for sharing my experience. A lot of people say, ‘Yeah, I have two years clean, I have three years clean. I’m struggling right now. Or I have 30 years clean.’ I had somebody reach out and [tell me that] I’m doing a good job. It’s a scary thing to put yourself out there. And just to know that I have so much support from people that I don’t even know is a really special thing for me.”

Adam David becomes the Season 27 winner of ‘The Voice’

After several jaw-dropping performances, David made it into the semi-final round but was shocked to learn that he didn’t make it into the top four. Desperate to change that, he competed for an instant save and was soon placed in the finale alongside Jadyn Cree, Jaelen Johnston, Lucia Flores Wiseman and RENZO, where he eventually went on to win the whole thing.

He is the first ever instant save contestant to do so.

“From the very first note of ‘Baby I love Your Way’ to ‘Hallelujah’ [which he sung in the finale] I’ve poured my heart into every moment,” David wrote on Instagram following his win. “Thank you for the love, the votes, the messages and for believing in me every step of the way.”

And who believed in him most? His coach, Bublé, who told David, “You’re my kind of artist… Congratulations, I knew you’d get here,” right before he was named the winner.

“It’s vindicating. It’s reinforcing. I struggle with self-doubt. You know what I mean? And there was something that happened when I made it to the top 20 that it just occurred to me, like how much outside proof do you need to just start believing in yourself?” David said of Bublé in that same Deepest Dream interview. “How many people need to tell you you’re doing a good job, you sound great, whatever. How many people need to say it to me before I can just start to say, you know what, I believe in myself? And that [is] how Michael has been on this whole thing. We’ve had a lot of deep conversations, and he’s a really great guy.”

This was Bublé’s second consecutive Voice win, and he is expected to return as a coach in the upcoming 28th season. He also hinted that David will be performing at one of his upcoming shows in a post-show interview, showcasing just how much appreciation he has for the singer.
