‘Getting Stronger Every Day’—the Pioneer Woman Saves a Baby Calf from a Winter Storm
A freezing baby calf, a dramatic rescue, and a heartwarming update from the Drummond ranch!
The Pioneer Woman has saved a baby calf! Ree Drummond and her husband, Ladd, recently discovered a baby cow, which was struggling to survive on its own, and they quickly switched into protective parent mode.
During the freezing cold winters on the Drummond ranch in Osage County, Oklahoma, ranchers have to work extra hard to make sure all of the baby calves are safe and healthy—and it’s not always easy. The Drummonds realize that, and shared a sweet note to their fellow ranchers on Instagram.
“Shout out to all our fellow ranchers and farmers who have undoubtedly had their share of extra work (including bottle calves) over the past week. 🙌”
But the Drummonds have also had to put in some extra time to keep their cattle safe. The couple have been keeping their social media fans in the loop as they nurse the calf back to health. On January 24, a post was shared to @drummond_ranch and @thepioneerwoman, explaining that Ladd found a cow on the pasture who had just given birth, but the calf was nowhere to be seen. Later on, he spotted the calf.
“Fortunately, he found the calf, who hadn’t nursed at all and was too weak to follow its mama,” the post reads. “The calf was freezing, so Ladd loaded her up and let her warm up in the feed truck while he fed a couple more pastures. Since the mama was so swollen, the calf wouldn’t have been able to nurse—so Ree and Ladd took the baby to their garage for a bit.”
Later, they fed the calf and had her spend the night inside their garage to get away from the cold temperatures, with the hope of reuniting her with her mother.
“Tomorrow when the sun comes up, Ladd will try to get her back with her mama 🙏❤️,” the Drummonds wrote.
Ree shared an update
The next morning, Ree and Ladd tried to get the calf back to her mother to nurse but she was still too weak, unable to nurse on her own. The couple shared that for a while, they weren’t sure if the calf would survive.
“The calf had a few hours where she looked like she wasn’t going to make it (she’d been born in the winter storm and had a rough start), but after the mama’s colostrum, 2 bags of colostrum replacer, and the first round of milk replacer, she started pepping up a bit,” they wrote. “Now she’s in a warm spot in the old barn where she’ll stay for the next few cold days. But for now, the calf is alive and getting stronger every day. 🙏”
Ree and Ladd shared that while it’s unlikely the calf will be able to nurse from her mother, Ladd is hoping to try one more time to get the calf and her mother back together.
Many people shared sweet remarks for the Drummonds on the post, writing things like, “My heart breaks for all these animals during these storms! Praying she can pull through!” and “Awww!! This is so sweet!! Hope Mama and baby are doing well.”
Keep watching @drummond_ranch and @thepioneerwoman for more updates in regards to the calf’s health and recovery.
