Luke Murray—one of actor Bill Murray’s six kids—was recently named head basketball coach for Boston College. That’s right, the Ghostbusters actor’s son is going to be a head coach in the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA). To celebrate, we’re sharing everything you need to know about their relationship. Read on for more.
Who is Bill Murray’s son?
Bill has six sons: Homer, Luke, Caleb, Jackson, Cooper and Lincoln. None are as famous as their father, but now that Luke, age 40, has been named the new head coach of Boston College’s Men’s basketball team, that might change.
“Today marks a turning point in Boston College men’s basketball,” Boston College’s athletic director Blake James said, per ESPN. “In Luke Murray, we have found a leader who does not just understand the modern landscape of college basketball—he has helped define it. His role in building a national championship-caliber program, his sophisticated offensive vision and his relentless pursuit of excellence make him the perfect fit to lead our student athletes. We are thrilled to welcome Luke, his wife, Kara and their family to the BC [Boston College] community.”
Prior to joining Boston College’s coaching staff, Luke worked as an assistant coach at Wagner, Towson, Rhode Island, Xavier, Louisville and UConn—a team currently competing in March Madness. Many people—including this author—have that team slated to win it all, but right now it’s anyone’s guess who wins.

UConn plays Michigan State tonight in the Sweet 16. If they win, UConn will play in the Final Four, and if they win again they will play in the championship. Luke is expected to be coaching at all the games since his contact with Boston won’t start until after March Madness concludes.
“I am deeply honored and incredibly grateful to lead the Boston College men’s basketball program,” Luke said after the news was announced, according to ESPN. “BC is a university with a prestigious academic reputation and a storied basketball tradition. Boston College alumni and fans will find our program defined by a standard of excellence, and our team will play an unselfish, tough and highly competitive brand of basketball. I am excited to get to work to build this proud program. Go Eagles!”
Luke and his wife Kara have four kids, who are often seen on the sidelines when Luke is coaching.
Do Bill and Luke Murray get along?
To no one’s surprise, Bill and Luke get along great. In fact, Bill can often be found watching UConn games cheering on his son.
“I’m very proud of this boy, he’s a wonderful kid and he’s worked very hard,” Bill told Big Time East in 2023 after UConn won the national championship.
Like most father and son duos though, Bill and Murray don’t always share the same interests.
“I think that’s pretty clear early on,’’ Luke told USA Today in 2017. “We’re different people, and I think he probably likes it that way.’’

“You know, we don’t really have those traditional father-son conversations that it seems that a lot of people do. It just wasn’t part of my upbringing. But I do think there was probably a time where he made a change in mentality as far as what I was doing,” the coach continued. “As I’ve kind of grown and climbed the ladder in college basketball, so to speak, I think he has a greater appreciation for it. And at this point, he’s as big a supporter as anyone.’’
