Rare Photos From the Making of ‘Rebel Without a Cause’ That Reveal a Little-Seen Side of James Dean
See James Dean goof with Natalie Wood, listen to the director and show off his car-racing trophies
It’s no hyperbole to say that Rebel Without a Cause is one of the most iconic films of all time. The 1955 drama, directed by Nicholas Ray and starring James Dean and Natalie Wood, set the template for teen movies and Dean’s signature swagger has been imitated (but never quite equalled) by countless actors in the 70 years since its release, while his charisma remains as arresting as ever today.
Rebel Without a Cause is a major part of the pop cultural vernacular, and a number of revealing photographs were captured behind the scenes. Seeing Dean in a casual and even playful mode during the making of the film is particularly poignant, given his untimely death at just 24, and these images reveal a new side of the rebellious star who defined an era.
