Jane Fonda Confirms ‘9 to 5’ Sequel With Dolly Parton and Lily Tomlin
The stars of 9 to 5 are heading back to work! Jane Fonda just confirmed that a sequel to the 1980 classic is on the way, and that she and her costars Dolly Parton and Lily Tomlin are all on board for the project.
Fonda made the exciting announcement this week while speaking to reporters at a Television Critics Association press tour for a documentary about her life, according to People magazine. “My involvement is an executive producer and together with Lily, we’re working with the writers,” Fonda said of the upcoming sequel. “Right now, Dolly, Lily and I are all intending to be in it.”
As 9 to 5 fans fondly remember, the original movie starred Parton, Tomlin, and Fonda as three secretaries who decide to get revenge on their sexist boss by kidnapping him and taking over the whole business themselves. Nearly four decades later, the film still boasts a devoted and enthusiastic following.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, 9 to 5 is still one of the highest-grossing box office comedies of all time, with a $356 million adjusted haul ($103.3 million in 1980). The movie was so popular that it even spawned a TV comedy and a Tony-nominated Broadway musical. However, fans have been constantly speculating over the years whether there would ever be a second movie. Of course, we’re all thrilled that we finally have our answer.
We can’t say we’re too surprised, though, especially since the iconic trio dropped a few hints while presenting the award for best supporting actor in a limited series or movie at the 2017 Emmys. “Personally, I have been waiting for a 9 to 5 reunion ever since we did the first one,” Parton said at the award show. (We could not agree more!)
There’s no word yet on when the sequel will actually be released, but that won’t stop us from looking forward to whatever adventures these lively ladies take on next. If anyone’s right for this kind of job, it’s definitely them!
