Katherine Schwarzenegger Reveals the Family Tradition She’s Passing to Her Kids (Exclusive)
Katherine reveals why handwritten cards from her mom Maria Shriver are treasures she'll keep forever
Texting might be all the rage right now, but 36-year-old actress Katherine Schwarzenegger prefers putting pen to paper. In a recent conversation with Woman’s World, the mother of three opened up about why that is and how her mother, Maria Shriver, was the one who inspired her to do it. Read on for more.
Inside the Schwarzenegger Family’s handwritten tradition
As the daughter of her father, Arnold Schwarzenegger, Katherine is no stranger to the spotlight. From spending time in the California Governor’s mansion to now working as an author and animal advocate, she truly knows what it means to have all eyes on her. Despite all of that public pressure, Katherine has always found time to bond with her family, namely in the form of cards.
“I was raised with my mom always emphasizing how important handwritten notes are—especially handwritten thank-you cards,” Katherine tells Woman’s World. “I’ve saved cards from people everywhere. And now, especially since my grandma [Eunice Kennedy Shriver] passed away, they mean even more. Being able to hold onto cards from her and my grandpa [Sargent Shriver] is so special. Her handwriting was so distinct, and it’s really sweet to go back and reread them.”

Speaking of re-reading things, Katherine said one of the cards she always goes back to was given to her by her sister, Christina.
“My sister sent me a really beautiful card for my first Mother’s Day and I love re-reading that,” she explained. “I also love re-reading cards from the beginning of mine and my husband’s [Chris Pratt] relationship, because we used to write each other a lot of handwritten cards, especially when we would travel apart from each other. So it’s always fun to be able to go back and reflect.”
Katherine Schwarzenegger on motherhood and keeping cards for her kids
Katherine currently has three kids with Pratt and according to her, she’s already started having them write cards.
“My daughter Lyla is in pre-K and loves writing. My daughter, Eloise, is in preschool, so she’s starting to write cards as well,” Katherine said. “I was actually just looking at all the cards that I’ve kept for my kids and Lyla and Eloise are already at the place where they’re, like, ‘Can you read me my cards that I got when I was born or for my first birthday?’ So it’s a really sweet thing.”
Where to buy the cards Katherine Schwarzenegger swears by
If you want to start mailing out cards, Katherine recommends checking out Hallmark.
“They have a whole series of thank you cards that I just love to have on hand,” she says. “I also always keep birthday cards on hand, not just for adults, but for kids. Hallmark makes such beautiful ones that kids just love getting. And I just got a bunch of them for my son’s first birthday. He got really beautiful ones that have glitter in them, and they’re just so special to keep.”

“There’s nothing that can change the course of someone’s day or week or even month, but a card can show someone how much they mean to you,” she continued. “We live in such a busy time and a busy world, and people have a lot going on. So the idea that someone would take time to sit down, pick up a pen and put pen to paper to write down a note that is just for you, really shows that they took the time to think about you and you only.”
