Her character was beloved and her portrayal was one that has stuck with viewers in the decades since she gave her final performance as Laura, but that wasn’t her last hoorah on the screen. Gilbert has kept busy over the years, but one of the places we’ve recently seen her shine was none other than the Hallmark Channel. The 60-year-old actress appeared in the beloved series When Calls the Heart, and her involvement in the show is near and dear to her. Here, read all about her work on the series, as well as her history on the Hallmark Channel!
Melissa Gilbert made her Hallmark debut in ‘Thicker Than Water’ (2005)
Gilbert took the lead in this 2005 Hallmark flick as Natalie, an attorney who learns after her father’s death that before marrying her mother, he was married to a rodeo queen. Heading out to unfamiliar waters to look for answers and learn more about this mysterious woman, she comes face to face with the daughter of her father’s ex-wife, who is struggling to manage and protect the wild horses that roam her property. While in this new and unfamiliar place, she forms a unique bond with a few people she never expected to meet.
Gilbert’s Hallmark run continues with ‘Sacrifices of the Heart’ (2007)
Gilbert took on her second Hallmark film starring once again as an attorney with a difficult family dynamic. Though successful in her career, her personal relationships aren’t so fruitful, and a call from her brother informing her of her father’s failing memory forces her to come home and confront what she’s been avoiding.
The actress stars in ‘The Christmas Pageant’ (2011)
Gilbert stars as a big-time Broadway director who can’t seem to keep a job. That being said, she must resort to directing a small-town production in upstate New York. Though reluctant, the charm of the small town and its residents starts to grow on her, giving her a new perspective.
Melissa Gilbert revisits Hallmark on ‘When Calls the Heart’ (2025)

Melissa Gilbert originated the role of Inspector Georgie McGill in a recent episode of the hit series When Calls the Heart. Set to appear in two episodes this season, we come to learn that she shares a past with Bill, played by Jack Wagner. While this cameo is exciting for Gilbert as she’s returning back to the Hallmark screen, it also has some special meaning because of the person she’s working with.

Michael Landon, Jr. serves as executive producer on the series—son of none other than Michael Landon, who played Gilbert’s on-screen father on Little House on the Prairie for several years and whom she shared a special bond with.
“I know that whatever he has me doing and saying I can trust is going to be wonderful and exciting and interesting,” Gilbert told PEOPLE of working with Michael Landon, Jr. “We’ve been friends for 50-some-odd years, and I adore him, I adore his family. I think his wife is just the greatest,” she said. “It’s just so nice to be back in an environment where I feel completely protected, appreciated and loved.”
