Known for his powerful ballads and music career spanning decades, it’s no wonder that Michael Bolton is regarded as an industry legend. Now, at 72, the iconic singer is opening up about his health and wellness, specifically his cancer diagnosis in 2023. After undergoing brain surgery and other forms of treatment, Bolton is sharing the challenges he faced along the way and how the experience has reshaped his outlook on life. Keep reading to learn more about Michael Bolton’s health journey and how he’s moving forward.

A look into Michael Bolton’s cancer diagnosis

While Bolton underwent emergency brain surgery in December 2023, he didn’t share the news with fans until early 2024, choosing to focus privately on his recovery before going public with his diagnosis.

And music served as a beacon the entire time. Bolton was diagnosed with glioblastoma—a rare and aggressive form of brain cancer—and when he woke up from surgery to remove a tumor, he was singing a few minutes later. That was a big moment for his daughters, who have been focusing on joy and lighthearted moments ever since the cancer started.

“You’re reaching into your resources and your resolve in a way that you never would have thought,” Bolton told People. “Succumbing to the challenge is not an option. You’re really quickly drawn into a duel. I guess that’s the way you find out what you’re made of.

Michael Bolton faced further surgery and treatment for cancer

The doctors were able to remove the tumor in its entirety during Bolton’s first surgery, which, according to his neuro-oncologist, Dr. Ingo Mellinghoff, only happens in 30 to 40 percent of glioblastoma cases.

However, shortly after that, Bolton returned to the emergency room for a second brain surgery due to an infection. He also finished radiation and chemotherapy treatment in October, which impacted his short-term memory, mobility and speech. The good news is that while Bolton continues to undergo MRIs every two months to monitor for any recurrence, his April scans came back clear.

Going forward, his health is all about monitoring and remaining optimistic, as the recurrence rate for this cancer is about 90 percent.

“Whenever you find yourself in any kind of challenging position, just to know that you’re not alone going through it is a big deal,” said Bolton. “It actually helps people to know. It reminds them that they’re not alone.”

How Michael Bolton is moving forward from his diagnosis

With clear scans and no tumor, Bolton seems to be in good spirits. He’s settled into life at home in Westport, Connecticut, where he’s resided for more than 30 years. Most of his day-to-day life is spent with his three daughters, Holly, Isa and Taryn as well as his six grandchildren, Amelia, Olivia, Dylan, Grayson, River and Jack.

He is also keeping up with his physical health by meditating daily and golfing as much as he can. And hopefully, it won’t be long before he’s singing again. For now, he’s taking voice lessons and undergoing voice therapy with a virtual coach.

“I find comfort in general more easily. [The whole experience] gives me a heightened sense of appreciation. It’s unthinkable for it to be okay not to make the most of your life,” he said. “I think we develop capabilities and problem management, and we learn how to make the best out of a bad situation. You have to be a cheerleader for yourself.”

Bolton isn’t giving up any time soon either. He continued, “I want to keep going. I feel there’s still a lot to do on the fight side. I got a title for a song: ‘Ain’t Going Down Without a Fight.’ ”
